M35B Exhaust Manifold Drain

Hey All,

Even with the copious amounts of info at hand, I'm still finding it difficult to definitively ID the drain on our manifold. The obvious choice is the circled plug. It looks a bit large to be just a drain but it would do the trick as we only need the manifold drained to do the job. We need to take the exhaust riser off to assess/repair the leaking aqua lift.

I didn't had to drain here. It is not that complicated to remove the aqua-lift from its position. In our situation it took me less than an hour to have it on the workbench.

Hey Durk,
We still need to extract the riser and manifold flange to assess there condition. Don't see a need to drain entire "fresh water" cooling system, just the manifold. We can't seem to find any definitive drain location and hoped that the plug indicated in the photo would illicit and emphatic response (yes or no) from someone out there.
There is a great post ( 1995 Catalina 36 MKII Muffler and Manifold Exhaust Riser Replacement Project Documentation - Full Project Report FINAL dtd 08-07-2018.pdf ) that describes most of what we are undertaking but does not include the manifold drain question.

This is a great time to tackle this as we sailed a week ago and now there's snow in the forecast for Seattle.

Cheers!

It looks as a big difference in our approaches taking the exhaust muffler out for repair.
What I noted was the bad quality of the Aqua-muffler itself. The inlet pipe shows a crack in the length of the pipe and on the inside near this crack is a kind of backing-strip. Also a bad (read no) proper bonding on the housing, only kept tight by a thin layer of gelcoat. So no wonder that all was leaking there, especially with engine under high load causing lots of water in front of the galley.
I am going to repair all with a proper vinylester-epoxy system instead of looking for an alternative (our model Aqualift muffler is obsolete).

Update....
Our Universal M35 is a M35"A" (thanks, Don Lincoln: Universal M-35AC https://www.catalina36.org/forum/general-discussion/universal-m-35-and-b)

and

Aqua Lift repaired and reinstalled! It appeared that there were at least four previous attempts to fix the leak. Cosmetic repair of water damage to engine cover and galley panel pending.

I fixed my water muffler crack by sanding suspect crack area, cleaning with acetone, taping off circumference around the top of tank and smearing with JB Weld high heat epoxy.   Not pretty but worked....

Nice job, David. Do you have a photo of the manifold without the heat shield?

Unfortunately, no photos of exhaust riser w/out wrap. It looked solid at welds and threads to manifold flange.

We seem to go through life forgetting to documenting our experiences as well as we might. It is a blessing and can be a curse. I am trying to be better about photos of projects as the threads on this site have been so helpful with work on Nudibranch. (finished a racor 200 series powder coat removal, filter replacement and reinstall... thanks to ubiquitous info and wise owners! https://www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/racor-filter-leak )

On to rebedding the binnacle. https://www.catalina36.org/forum/general-discussion/moisture-aft-berth

As additional information to repair of a leaking exhaust muffler: don't forget to check the bottom of the exhaust muffler. The construction here is also weak, similar as on the top, and in our situation also showed leakages.
To eliminate all we added also to the bottom also an additional layer of glass-epoxy and filled the whole bottom part till flush. The inlet-pipe we repaired similar as the other posts are showing.
