Rich-
Here's our details. We replaced our bearing at 970 engine hours in 2018.
I was going to do it myself, having done it twice before on our C30. However, I could not remove the prop from the shaft no matter what I tried. I needed someone with a serious prop puller . A bearing removal tool would also be helpful and I didn't have one.
On our C30, I removed the prop, removed the shaft from the flange (a lot of effort) and pulled the shaft out of the boat. I then used a hammer, various screw drivers and channel lock pliers to pound out and remove the old cutlas bearing. Not having the correct tools, this took many hours.
In 2018, on our C36, we paid $80 for the new bearing and $340 of boat yard labor to remove/replace it and pull the prop. This is eight year old info but it might be of interest. Shop around.
Good luck

Lots of previous posts in the forum, Rich: https://www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/cutlass-bearing-sh...
If you drop the rudder and remove the prop shaft it's east to 'fold' it inward and pull the old one out, then tap in the new one, tougher to rig up a removal sleeve. The ass'n tool went missing years ago. KL

I've removed cutlass bearings the old fashioned way - shaft out cut carefully from inside the strut and destroy the old cutlass bearing to get it out. Last time I used a borrowed Strut Pro tool and the job was actual easy and quick. The tools's hardened shims are about the same size as the cutlass bearing. Once set up as you turn the screws the shims push the old bearing out along the shaft (push toward the propeller end). Slip the new bearing over the propeller shaft and reverse the process to install.

HELLO ALL, I ALSO NEED TO REPLACE MY CUTLESS BEARING. MY BOAT IS A 1984 36' WITH 1 INCH SHAFT. CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE CORRECT OD OF THE BEARING? I HAVE READ LOTS OF THE PREVIOUS POSTS ON THE SUBJECT WITH NO SPECIFIC MENTION OF ITS SIZE. ONE MORE THING I WOULD LIKE TO MEANTION. WHY DOESN'T THE ASSOCIATION BUY A NEW CUTLESS BEARING TOOL?

The OD is 1 1/4". I am going to replace my bearing next month during a haul out and I intend to source an off cut of 1 1/4" steel tube and use it to gently hammer or if that does not work press out the old bearing once the shaft is removed. I'm replacing the prop shaft so I will cut the old one in several places to get it out without dropping the rudder.

THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY. I FOUND ONE ONE CATALINA DIRECT. PRICE IS REASONABLE COMPARED TO MOST IF THEY EVEN HAVE THE RIGHT SIZE.
