Foredeck padeye

I am setting up a homemade sprit pole for C36, a 1999, and I want to install a padeye on the foredeck. Should I through bolt it? - but the deck in that area is fairly thick. Or simply screw it into the deck?
Thanks

Tom,
You will definitely want to through bolt it, with a good sized backing plate.

Are you familiar with the process for through bolting hardware?

Thanks for getting back. I bought a backing plate to match the padeye, and both have holes for a 1/4" screws.

Should I just mark and then drill through and measure to confirm the length of the screws needed. I would also use epoxy and get cap nuts. Right?

Thanks very much

Below is a link you may want to view before proceeding, it does a much better job in explaining than I could. You don't want to "just" drill a hole the same size as your bolt.

Allan,
Thanks for that very informative article. Is there a place on the website to put a permanent link to articles like that?

The only thing I would add is that if you do not have a Dremel, a nail with the head cut off, and a 90 deg bend at the tip is a serviceable alternative.
It will bounce around inside the hole a bit, but it will remove the balsa.

The credit and thanks goes to "Maine Sail" for that one. Hopefully you also had a chance to view some of his other fine "How To's"

When I go to the web site, I never get past the forums. I guess I need to widen my horizons!
Thanks,
Dave
