Technical conclusions.

Looking through many of our technical issues that are posted here, I see many times questions are posed about a specific problems after which there is much banter about the possible solution.

Occasionaly the thread dies with no conclusion. Now I can understand this as I have a to do list longer than my attention span. Some items get tossed around for discussion but, more pressing projects take presidents or we find the fix, get distracted and move to the nest issue with out updating our bretheren. We would be richer as a group if we had the benifit of the knowledge of the final fix when determined.

That's a good point, Capt Steve.

For example, I still have my raw water pump housing on my work bench for eventual disass'y and hope of a reasonably cost-effective rebuild. My thread soliciting advice on that issue has to be many months old by now.

I really hope to get to it, and I really hope I remember to report back here. Thanks for the reminder.

Duane, I have just ordered a new raw water pump (Sherwood) from torrensen marine for 400 bucks! I also ordered another impeller and gaskets.
I ordered the seals but I found the same seal they wanted 43 for and the other seal they wanted 70 for at a local bearing and seal co. for 5.47 and 10 DOLLARS so I called and cancelled these from torrensen. www.crownproductsinc.com and ask for BJ Dilibero, I measured the seals and brought them in. When I get them from ups I will insure they work and post the part numbers (I ordered two sets). There is a internal snap ring between the 2 bearings and the seal next to the brass plate (plate must be sanded with sand paper on a flat surface to remove all corrosion on the side away from the impeller). this seal will be distroyed removing it (I poked a hole in the sheet metal cup that is pressed into the cast iron pump housing and pried it out. YOU CANNOT GET THE SHAFT OR SEALS OUT UNTIL YOU GET TO THIS INTERNAL SNAP RING!!! Don't try to press the shaft out as it should lightly tap out after the snap ring is off. My bearings are in great shape so I didn't replace them. After all this is done I will have a new and a spare pump and my walet will be 450 bucks lighter----there went my stainless dorade vents I wanted!

Butch,
Please enlighten me on the stainless dorade vents you're looking at. I have often thought about upgrading mine to stainless, but never found the right ones. What have you found?

Thanks, Mike

Mike, I didn't save the website but we found it by doing a google search for Stainless Dorade Vents. Best price I've found was $153.00 for 4". Sorry I can't be more help-anyone else?

Butch and Spanki,

I am curious if you completed your pump rebuild using the parts you bought. Care to post any additional info?

Thanks,

DITO... I'm staring at a rebuild and would also like to know if the parts you found work and what the part numbers are.

All,
Back to Steve's original point. Perhaps there is a way that these threads could be marked "Closed" once we got a definitive answer/resolution?

That said, here's may 2cents on raw pumps. Tara's population is 4: 1 on the engine, two rebuilt spares onboard (just in case) and one at home waiting for rebuild. Attached is the gaouge on Oberdorfer 202M-15 pumps used on many M25 series engines. Rebuild is easy. The hardest part in pressing the seals. Without a press, I use a socket and tap the seals it. Just be careful not to crunch the carbon bearing.
I had a great source for M25 parts, but he went out of business with the current economy last year. Fortunately, I stocked up on parts before he went under.
Also had a great source for stainless steel ventilation funnels that attached to the dorades, but that source died as well:(.

Yes, the beariing seals worked great, I ordered a new pump (400+!!) and keep as a spare. I also bought a spare set of seals so I can rebuild again.
Rebuilding the pump require internal and external snap ring pliers and the large inner snap ring for the bearings can only be gotten to after pealing out the spring type seal. Took less than 2 hours and cost less than $30.00 with the seals from the formentioned supply. VERY SATISFIED Let me know if you want the part numbers and mfg. for the two seals.
www.bluewaterhardware.com is where I found nice round ss dorads for 153 each but when I got them I descovered I needed the threaded flange ($70ea. with deckplate so they came up to 123 per side but they look great!
