Catalina 36 Newbie... Thinking seriously about a 1995 MKII WK

Hello all,

My wife and I are seriously considering putting in an offer for a 1995 MKII Wing Keel, Standard Rig.  There are a few things we have noticed about the boat that will need repair, and I will ask about them momentarily.  That said, would you mind letting me know the common items to keep an eye out for?

We are established weekend cruisers, having owned a 1977 C&C 27 MKIII on Lake Michigan for 16+ years, and I enjoyed doing the work on the boat myself.  That boat, however, had much more simple systems, though I consider myself to be reasonably handy and read up before I attempt something I have not done before.

This time the boat will be kept in western Florida, thus the rationale for the Wing Keel.

What should I look for in the way of common problems?
What are the good, bad & ugly issues related to the 36 MKII?
What checks/repaires & modifications should I plan on?

Beyond that, here are a couple of items that need to be addressed:

The vertical teak plywood panel at the aft of the galley is delaminated near the cockpit sole about 2 - 3 inches up.  The owner has been asked about the issue, but we're not getting much enlightenment.  There is no other evidence of ongoing dampness or water damage.  Could this have been caused by a) the boat sitting on the hard and the companionway hatch dripping, thus causing a puddle, b) what appears to be the water muffler potentially leaking (it is just aft of the panel), c) the exhaust elbow coming off the engine leaking, or something else I am not considering?

The port upper shroud is a bit loose, and when I tug on it fore & aft, the spreader tip swings considerably (2 - 3") for & aft.  The starboard side does not do this despite also being somewhat loose.  Beyond a rig tuning,  am wondering how the spreader base attaches to the mast, and if there might be, for example pins at the for & aft base of the spreader, presuming that a pin might be missing.  The spreader itself is at the correct angle, and does not appear to be bent.

Beyond the trying to pick through the message board here for consistent themes, is there a "bible" of C36 wisdom available that you would refer me to?

Thanks in advance!

Bruce

Bruce, just put spreader into the search box (upper right hand side of screen) a couple of articles came up on spreader and it appears Catalina Direct has some messaging as well.
I would think on the bulkhead that it would take quite a bit of wartier to cause damage and there would be other signs.

Bruce, I bought a 95 Mk 2 three years ago.  Work that was necessary:  replaced standing rigging and had all chain plates rebedded  They leaked into the cabin.  Check all hatches and ports for leakage.  I had my forward hatch replaced.  Heat exchanger needed to be replaced.  It was corroded.  Raw water seacock was very corroded and need to be replaced.  Also check the head.  Mine was a Jabsco manual and it never worked well.  I just replaced it.  Also the dripless shaft seal started leaking.  Just replaced it as well during my last haul out in October.  All boats differ however.  This has been my experience.  To conclude I love the boat.  Sails beautifully.  It's my second Catalina.  But remember there will always be something.  Good luck

Thanks everyone for your input so far.  I really appreciate your insights.  Any further comments would of course be welcome.

Bruce, on the spreaders there just a flat bar with a slight angle it on sides that passes thru the mast. Then each spreader slips over the bar has a pin that goes thru both. That is all that keeps the spreaders on.

Bruce you need a good surveyor.  Worth the money.  You should not pay for the impacts of delayed maintenance that a Surveyor will find.

the delamination was probably caused by leaky muffler.   Where you mention is where the water comes out.  In addition to fixing the delamination this means you will probably have to replace the muffler and the pipes attached to it.  Probably $400 to $600 for parts if you do yourself and if you do that might as well remove the heat exchanger and have it professionally cleaned and tested and since you are there might as well change the hoses.  That's how it works.  One thing leads to another. As Linda Radner use to say. "It's always something".

key answer though is it's a great and fun boat.

I have a 95 which I purchased 2 years ago.  Issues have been limited to leaks around the mast and side hatches, look for discolor on the wood.  The veneer in the boat is not great.  I echo the sentiment that the boat is very stable and sails well.  The shower bilge has a tendancy to leak.  Love the boat.

Hello again everyone,

So, it turns out the engine on the boat is beyond overhaul, and needs a replacement.  Clearly we can take that cost off the price, but I am having a bit of a challenge finding options for the engine replacement as the M35 is no longer made.  I have also seen a few horror stories about substituting a M25.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for all your help!

Beta Marine will fit with very few alterations - I think there is at least one writeup in the technical section on what is required.

Hi Bruce,

we have been sailing a Nonsuch 30 Classic for the past 12 years. We purchased our 1999 36 MkII this past June and have never looked back. We love it.

It has taken getting used to with those 2 sails, and all those dang wires all over the place. But, we're getting there.

Cheers

Bob
