Recommended Stops in the Lower Chesapeake?

As the warmer weather nears, i am starting to make my Chesapeake Bay cruising plans. I am heading out of Norfolk, VA for a couple weeks. Any one have any suggested stops worth checking out?

I can give some suggestions for around Deltaville. You could make that distance in a day if you want, or you could be more leisurely about it and find an anchorage on Mobjack Bay first. Anyway, when you make it as far as the Piankatank you can choose to Anchor out in Fishing Bay or if you are ready for for a slip with shore power you can either visit one of the marinas on Jackson Creek off the Piankatank or come around Stingray Point and in Broad Creek were there are another 1/2 dozen marinas to choose from.

From Deltaville, you have quite a few options. Continuing up the bay there are several places to consider along the western shore or you can cross over to Onancock, VA, Tangier Island, VA or Crisfield, MD.

Some one with more knowledge of the upper Bay will need to take over from here. I'm just starting to scratch the surface of what the Bay has to offer.

You might also try the Chesapeake Bay forum on Sailnet. There are a lot of northern bay sailors over there.

My wife and I sail our Catalina 36MKII "Disconnected" out of Hampton Yacht Club and have made several trips up the bay to Baltimore, Annapolis, Rock Hall, Oxford, Saint Michaels, Solomon's Island, Reedville, Deltaville, Fishing Bay, Urbanna, Irvington, Onancock, Cape Charles, and Portsmouth. We usually take 2 weeks in mid to late June to make our trips because the weather on the bay seems better that time of year. Less chance of violent thunderstorms, and nor-easters but still good breezes. We want to make the trip down the ICW to somewhere but as of yet have not tried it.
I highly recommend Urbanna, and Onancock for shorter cruises.

About ten years ago my late wife and I sailed through the Chessapeak on a cruise from Florida to Connecticut. We took about two weeks sailing to different marinas and anchorages in the Bay. We agreed it was one of the best places we ever cruised and said one day we would return when we could spend more time there. However, we kept puting it off and a few years later she passed away, so we never went back. My advice is to listen to the words of another old sailer who's name I can't remember, that went something like, "Go cruising now, it's later than you think".
