Universal M-35 A and B?

I'm seeing references to an A and B version of the M-35 diesel.
How do I find out what one I have aboard?
Is this a distinction without a real difference or something I should figure out?

The quick way is to note where your raw water pump is located.  If it is off to the starboard side of the engine, it's an M35A.  If it's in the center of the engine, it's an M35B.

The pictures help a lot, thank you! I have the A model then.
I've just started reading through both service manuals I found here and I'm not seeing a functional difference.
Am I missing anything or is there anything I should specifically know about?
I'm going to begin doing the neglected maintenance and I need all of the reference material I can find. My mechanical abilites are pretty slim but I'm learning.

I see in your signature line that you have an M-35AC. Is that significantly different than the A and B model?

I don't think the "C" is important.  I have read elsewhere on this forum that the "C" was a designation that Universal assigned to engines that were sold to Catalina.  Maybe there was some slight customization for Catalina Yachts, and the "C" indicated that.

And it is on the engine block on the port side.

I had the same question about the A vs B models, and the photos solved it, thank you very much. One difference is that the replacement 110 A alternators sold by Catalina Direct will not work on the B model. Note that the adjustable arm is underneath the alternator on the A model, and  above it on the B model.

Here is the M-35 History I pulled together from a variety of sources, including this forum and the C34IA forum

M-35

  1. This engine was produced by Universal, before Universal was purchased by Westerbeke.
  2. Introduced in 1987, based on the Kubota V-1200 block. Built from 1987 to 1997.

M-35A

  1. Westerbeke introduced the M-35A. This is the same as the original M-35, except:

    1. Revised wiring. The M-35A and M-35B both use the #200360 wiring schematic.
    2. Relocated oil pressure switch.
    3. Installed new breaker and preheat solenoid arrangement.

M-35A(C)

  1. The “(C)” designates that the engine is wired to CTY’s spec and engine panel, not Westerbeke’s panel

M-35B & M-35B(C)

  1. The M-35B is a different engine from the M-35 and M-35A. Based upon Kubota V-1305E block. The “(C)” designation is the same as for the M-35A(C).
