Air Condition Duct Work

Trying to lay out the duct work configuration in the salon. Does anyone have a picture of where their hose went through the salon/head wall to get to the V Berth. I understand some go through the louvered cabinet above the settee and into the head medicine cabinet and some go through the storage area along side the holding tank and under the toilet. I have heard of several configurations. Would love some input and pictures before I go cutting.

Jack, I did get them and they are of great help; I had one question regarding the duct hose you have going through the fiberglass cubbie in the salon. At the end of my cubbie, I don't have 4 inches of circle space for the hose . . . did you kind of pinch it here or maybe your boat had a larger wall space at the end of that access. This would be in regards to the next to the last picture you sent. I think you referred to as taken with your phone. I also have PVC pipes fiber glassed into the top of that same cubbie, so I would have to cut out and relocate if I want to try and go up into the louver door cabinet. I believe they are conduit for water or electric. Not sure though.
I am thinking that maybe each year might have been a little different.

Neil... don't know if you still want pics, but here they are. This [I] for a MK II BTW.

in loading the pics I got them out of order. The 2nd shows the A/C unit looking down and aft at it. You'll notice the large hose coming off the rectangular shaped black box (that's the manifold or distribution box) .

The large hose carries air up to the main cabin air vent just to the right (again looking aft) of the whole unit on the port side of the boat (pic 1).

There are 2 smaller grey hoses (hard to see) coming off the manifold. The easier one to see runs aft for the aft cabin. The other is on the forward side of the manifold and makes a sharp turn to the right (looking aft). It then runs up and thru the storage opening above the holding tank (pic 3) , thru the bulhead into the locker above the toilet, thru the medicine cabinet and thru the bulkhead into the Vee berth (picc 4). There is a vent head in the port bulkhead up high on thre bulkhead (cold air drops so this is sufficient for the berth).

Hope this helps.

Chuck,
Thanks, yes I do still need pictures. I do have a MKII and my question is:
Is the duct hose 4"?? If so my cubbie behind the settee back may be a little smaller thank yours. I am going back and take another look at that. The far end of it (against the head wall or bulkhead) seems to pinch to smaller than 4 inches and I cannot go upwards without removing what appears to be conduit that is glassed over in the top of that cubbie.
Your pictures show plenty of clearance, so I need to take another look.
Again thanks, it is of great help to see this installed.

Chuck,
One more thing, it appears you did not put a vent in the head. Is that correct?

Did ours last year. Ran the" duct along the holding tank the through that little cubie under just aft of the forward salon bulkhead then through the empty space behind the head then up and through the cabinet above the sink then through the aft bulkhead in the v berth. Then? Not really worth all the drilling and worn out hole saw. We can hardly feel any flow. Same with the aft cabin. We ran the main duct 8" straight up through the space between the two cabinets port side salon. This vent alone would probably be enough to cool the main and forward cabin. The other thing that really helps on hot sunny days is covering the forward and main salon hatches with a towel or regular cover. Hope this helps. If I can I will post pics asap.

Neil...

The ducting going to the aft and forward cabins is 3 1/2 inch diameter grey ducting with wire inside to maintain shape.

Re your other question concerning the head... there is not a vent in the head. That being said, I don't think you need it but, I've had the boat for 7 years and used the A/C / heat twice. That's because we are on a mooring (no generator) and only used it when we were cruising and ended up on a dock beside a hill with no night time breeze.

Also, you should know that I did not install this system.. It came with the boat and I know the PO bought it this way. Either Catalina installed it at the factory or they had a subcontractor do it.

If anyone who has done this installation or is going to do it would like to document the process with a narrative and some photos I'd be happy to make it into an article and get it into the main website tech articles section. That's really the archive where this kind of good information should reside.

I will be starting the project in about 2 weeks and could take some pictures and document. I have been trying to gather all the pictures and information through this forum prior to starting, to try and get the best result. It so far appears there is slightly different amounts of space regarding whatever year your boat is. However, everything I have gathered to date is helpful and relative to what I am trying achieve. The project probably would not be complete to send to you until the middle to end of May.

Hi guys

It would be great if you could also comment on the equipment you have selected.

We leave in Hong Kong and it gets extremely hot and humid (already using A\C at home during the day and some nights to sleep, and it is only April!!!)

Andres,
I chose a 22,000 BTU unit made by Ocean Marine out of Stuart, FL. My choice was based on the fact that they made the unit per my specifications.
They make the unit right there and you can get the air flow in or out or any combination. Also I was able to get a 22,000 BTU for the same footprint as most 16,000 BTU units. It will fit under the salon settee directly in front of the galley sink.
I want to air the aft and V cabin and think the 22,000 will give the extra air flow needed to do that.
If you call or visit, you can speak directly with the owner, Joe, who is also the engineer.
I will make a photo as I go along.
