Sirius satelite radio antenna

Anybody have sirius or XM radio on board? Where did you mount antenna and will the Antenna give false data if placed next to GPS antenna?

I have XM. I bought a 'home' kit with a socket/stand for the receiver and the larger, hinged antenna with a base; about 2" square. I put the antenna under the dodger next to the starboard hatch and ran the wire through the hatch and eventually to the receiver which sits above the nav station. Works great. I don't have a GPS antenna other than the internal one on my ancient Garmin, so can't comment on that. If I remember, I put the antenna on top of the screen and close the hatch when leaving for any length of time, but usually forget and the antenna has been fine.

I have an older Sierius model which I plug into the receptical on the circuit panel & I run the antenna to the starboard opening port. I mounted the antenna on a 1" pole clip so I can run the wire out the port and clip the antenna onto the grab rail but I've found I never have to do that as the antenna sits on the little shelf (face up) and I get better reception than when I bring the unit into the house. Works great!

thank you for the great feed back.

I have a mushroom looking antenna that I mounted on the aft starboard hand rail right next to my GPS antenna.

I would guess there shold not be interferance being they are recieving signals from different satilites. Iam I correct?

Ours is mounted on the hoop around our radar on the stern post.

It is directly beside the GPS sensor and we have had no issues with them being side by each.

I had Sirus until last year, most times I found that reception was good with the antena below deck sitting on the shelf above the nav station. Oddly there were a couple places on the bay where I could not get a signal even with the antena moved outside.

I finaly gave up on Satalite radio as I could get no reception at home as I live in a canyon and the satalite was out of view from my house. Secondly I became bored with Sirus's selections, it had one station with an eclectic mix but, had a disc jocky format and the guy would blabler for long intervals. All other stations gave the option of Oldies, 70's, 80's, 90's, classical, jazz, country or other jaundra of your choice. I discovered Pandora and now use that aboard, granted it is not useful outside cell phone coverage but, the format is mine. I now have a station that mixes Classical with Greatful Dead, Big Band, Bob Wills and Sinatra, it is never boring. It is cheaper than satellite, I can control the music selection and it work at home.

Dannyog,

I have 2 Sirius mushroom antennas mounted on the starboard stern railing. I see no interference issues.

The previous owner had a GPS antenna installed in this railing location and ran the GPS cable inside the steel railing, down and into the stern storage locker. From there the cable went into the electrical panel.

I eliminated this GPS antenna when I installed my Raymarine C80 Chartplotter and put a new GPS antenna on my radar pole. I used the old GPS base with my new Sirius antenna and ran the Sirius wires in the same manner as the old GPS cable.

Now why do I have 2 Sirius mushroom antennas?

I get my Sirius music from a portable receiver that I move from car to home to boat. The receiver is placed on the shelf above the nav station and plugs into my stereo radio receiver. The Sirius receiver needs it's own antenna to get music. I tried using a portable antenna the way others have mentioned but it was never nautical enough to just have a portable antenna flopping about. It became a project to properly install the Sirius antenna.

The second Sirius antenna is for Sirius weather data that is connected to my Raymarine chart plotter.

Now the Raymarine Chart plotter software will allow you to get music delivered to your chart plotter and you can tune Sirius channels from the helm BUT! You need a separate music subscription and that adds a monthly fee. Plus you have to power up the chart plotter and keep it running while you listen to music. That's a large power draw and I already have a music subscription so it's a lot cheaper to just mount another antenna and move my portable Sirius receiver to the boat.

I found the antenna in the bargain room at Cabellas for $25.00 so it was no big deal to add a second antenna.

I have included pictures of the antennas and of the basic weather radar image from Sirius Weather.

By the way, 6 years ago I purchased a Sirius lifetime subscription for $499.00. It's one of those, I'm just going to do it, purchases that you hope won't be a waste of money. I don't know if it's still available but I'm well past the break even point and still using my Sirius receiver. :)
