You guys have helped with a couple of my projects, and I really appreciate it. Now something really important....cockpit speakers. My boat is of 1987 vintage. Those of you with similar, where did you install your speakers? I have some flush mount speakers, but I am not necessarily married to them.
I feel sure this has been discussed before, but when I click the search button above, the box drops down behind the ad (currently a Verizon ad), so I can't get to the dialog box. Can't seem to get rid of the ad either. Anyone else have that problem? FWIW, I am running Safari...

On my '91 MK I I have the walk-through transom, so instead of the one large rear lazarette like you have (and like what was on my prior '86) I have two smaller ones. I flush mounted the speakers on the forward sides of each lazarette. You could do the same by mounting them on the forward side of your lazarette. About 6" from the port and starboard edges would be best to allow for adequate speaker separation. From that location it's easy to run the speaker wire into the aft cabin and along the port side to your stereo. Careful when you make those big holes. Measure twice, cut once.

Jeff,
I have a 1987 also and when I bought the boat it had Bose speakers installed in the lazarette. I believe that they are model Marine 131 which you can see here: [url]http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/speakers/outdoor_marine_...
I have the older version and they are mounted horizontally. I'll be at the boat this weekend and will take pictures of the installation so that you can see how they are mounted.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like my initial plan is the way to go. Looking forward to seeing the pictures. Thanks for doing that. One more thing...how did you protect the back side of the speaker from stuff in the locker, reaching in, etc. Anything?

On mine, I have the LPG locker on the port side and the starboard side is a bottomless pit, so I don't store anything there. However, I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to jury rig a back cover. Use velcro or the screws from the speaker installation to avoid having to drill any more holes.

I didn't bother to protect the backs of my speakers, since the volume of air behind them makes them sound better.
If I had to do it over again, I'd buy speakers to mount on the pushpit to avoid the holes in the cockpit.
I do, however, like the fact that they're out of the way, and the sound isn't transmitted throughout the anchorage.

Another look at the speakers today (I've had them stored away for a while)...doesn't look like they need much protection. Pretty sturdy structure on the back side.
Thanks,

Do these 36's have the cockpit seats mounted aft over the stb and prt. quarters? If so, you can mount marine water proof speakers under the seats on brakets supplied with the speakers. There are several models avaible. That's what I just did. The wires were relatively easy to run, the speakers are out of the way and you don't have to cut holes in the boat. Its the perfect solution as far as I can see.

I took some pictures of my installation. The speakers have a hard case on the back of them and there is no additional protection added. They are mounted as high as possible on the vertical surface of the lazarette and they do not interfere with the lazarette lid. the speakers are mounted so that the back of them have the long speaker case pointed outboard, but NOT into the space between the hull and the interior wall/seatback.
This location does not cause any interference with people in the cockpit or the locker. I hose the boat down every time I use it and the speakers have been soaked with freshwater for the past 9 years and sound just fine.
