I'm seeing references to an A and B version of the M-35 diesel.
How do I find out what one I have aboard?
Is this a distinction without a real difference or something I should figure out?

The quick way is to note where your raw water pump is located. If it is off to the starboard side of the engine, it's an M35A. If it's in the center of the engine, it's an M35B.

The pictures help a lot, thank you! I have the A model then.
I've just started reading through both service manuals I found here and I'm not seeing a functional difference.
Am I missing anything or is there anything I should specifically know about?
I'm going to begin doing the neglected maintenance and I need all of the reference material I can find. My mechanical abilites are pretty slim but I'm learning.
I see in your signature line that you have an M-35AC. Is that significantly different than the A and B model?

I don't think the "C" is important. I have read elsewhere on this forum that the "C" was a designation that Universal assigned to engines that were sold to Catalina. Maybe there was some slight customization for Catalina Yachts, and the "C" indicated that.

And it is on the engine block on the port side.

I had the same question about the A vs B models, and the photos solved it, thank you very much. One difference is that the replacement 110 A alternators sold by Catalina Direct will not work on the B model. Note that the adjustable arm is underneath the alternator on the A model, and above it on the B model.
