Why a ridged boom vang?

Our boat came with a ridged boom vang and the seller made a big deal of it.

Are they really a good thing?

How do they help?

I think you meant rigid boom vang. The benefits are no topping lift and better sail trim. I have one and when racing it gives me the ability to fine tune the mainsail to the angle of sail and wind conditions. It also keeps the boom out of the cockpit and off of the bimini when the mainsail is stowed.

If you have one install it.
As Bill stated it will keep you boom off of the dodger, no need for a topping lift anymore. But most important as Bill stated it will allow you to trim the main much better under different conditions. Makes a huge difference
