Toe Rail construction

Has anyone ever drilled a hole through the toe rail on the foredeck? I would like to 'lace up' the lifelines up front. With a wood toerail on other boats I would just drill a few holes through for the lines. Is the toerail solid or hollow? does it have a wood core?

Thanks in advance.

Nimue,

I do not know the lay up of the toe rail on our boats but I would expect it to incorporate a wood stringer with a glass cap. My boat has provisions for wind skirt around the cockpit that used metal loops screwed into the toe rail. If installed as with any deck harware making sure to seal the holes well when installing the hardware it should be OK.

I have also seen people use a spectra line run between the base of the life line stantions to secure netting up forward, this would not require any new holes.

A wood core would make sense on some levels, but then I was thinking it might just be a whole bunch of glass jammed in there, and the top 1/2" might be pretty much solid. Anyone know?

I don't particularly want to screw a bunch of eyes in there, and I have done the spectra thing but don't find it works all that well.

I would be very careful about drilling an assortment of holes in the toe rail. I think it would be much easier and certainly less invasive to add the cable at the base of the stantions and then attach the line or netting to it. Just a thought. :)

Not sure about the construction of the toe rail on the 36, but on the 28 there is a good sized chunk of wood inside the toe rail. The stanchions on the 28 go through it and I pulled all of them and ground out the core and filled it with epoxy so I know it well. There are many similarities between the 36 and 28 construction methods so I suspect there is wood in the toe rail on the 36 as well. About 3 years ago I also received from an engineer at Catalina a cross-sectional diagram of two methods Catalina uses to do this area of the hull/deck joint and both of these diagrams show core in the toe rail.

That is the kind of info I was after. Thanks!

What do boat owners do that do not have an oganazation like this.

This is a perfect example of how this organazation improves our lot.

Steve, I will have to second that thought. I almost feel sorry for those who do not have an organization like ours to help them answer their quesitons regarding practially any part of our vessels, pardon the pun from "stem to stern".

Glenn,
I couldn't agree with you more! Tell every C36 owner you see about us. You'd be amazed at how many homeless C36's there are out there!!
