? on Stanchions on early model (<85) boats

howdy all,
I recently decided to re-do the non-skid area of the boat and in that process I removed and inspected the stanchions, i determined to replace all of the stanchions and all of the stanchions i believe are original. my boat was built in 1984 (226) and it appears that the stanchions have about a 6 degree inboard offset, if that is the correct term. the problem i have is that i have contact both catalina (kent) and catalina direct and they both assure me that the stanchons are 90 degree and have always been that way. the deck of my boat has a camber so that the deck attached to the cabin top is higher than the deck at the point of attachment to the hull and i don't see anyway that the stanchions could have every have been at a 90 degree angle. so this question is directed to those folks that have older model 36's. do you recall if the stanchions are at a 90 degree angle, which would cause them to be outboard of the deck or do you have angled stanchion bases? Garhauer can fabricate the stanchions with any offset i specify but before i did anything i wanted to see if anyone could shed and light on the matter. as always any input would be useful.

Mike,
I can't be certain if I am remembering my C36 or C30, but at some time in the past (many years ago) I called CY for a replacement stanchion. I specifically remember them asking me which stanchion it was, as each one had a slightly different angle between the base and upright (6, 8, and 10 degrees?). What you probably should do is put a large square up against each stanchion, and see if indeed they are square to the deck. My memory says they are not.

When we had to replace two stanchions on our 86 C34 there was no mention of angle. The top sticks out a tiny bit because of the deck camber, and that's they way they are on our boat and all of the vintage C36s I've seen.

Tom/Stu,
thanks for the info that set a light bulb off! I happen to have one of those electronic levels and that measure the angles in degrees off of plane. i can simply place the the electronic module on deck at various locations and get the exact degree that the deck is cambered. i know from placing the stanchions on a flat surface that they are indeed NOT 90 degrees.
thanks for the thoughs
