Smart Pilot X-5

Replacing Raymarine 4000 autopilot with the X-5. Any suggestions on location of components such as the controller and compass? Installation is on 1990 markI, # 1073. Thanks.

I installed my X5 about six months ago. I followed the directions and wandered around the inside of my boat with small magnetic compass. I chose to mount my fluxgate to the right/starboard of the waste holding tank. I had easy access to the area via the small door to the port of the tank and behind the mast that allows access to the mast wires.

I mounted my control unit on the outside of closet in the rear sleeping area under the cockpit. I selected that location due to its easy access to the nav station control panel and the pedestal guard.

I ran the wires for the control head up through the cockpit floor and into the pedestal guard and into a NapPod where I mounted the X5 control unit. I ran my power cable (+ -) up the port tube and the other wires (seatalk) up the starboard tube which made a very clean install.

After I installed my X5 I read an article where the installer mounted his fluxgate under the sink and bolted the unit to the forward side of the cabinet.
He also mounted the control unit on the inside wall behind the nav station seat.

One problem you might run into when begin to connect your wires. There are two wires that connect your wheel motor to the control unit. I found out the hard way while performing sea trials that Raymarine made an error on the wire color. When performing your pre-sea trial make sure your wheel turns the correct direction. If it does't just reverse the two wires. Also it helps to have someone with you to read the directions while you tweak the settings.

Good luck. You will enjoy the unit...

Please let us know how the X-5 handles your boat. I've gotten different reports - some say it works fine on the c-36, others that it's a little too light weight. Any comments on how it handles heavier seas and stronger winds (such as we get here in the SF Bay area - including outside the bay) would be greatly appreciated.
