If your just replacing the drum unit the mast will stand by its self. But to make you feel safer. Take and use your jib halyard and fasten it to your forward bow cleat and put a little bit of tension on the line.

Thanks Randy, your experience is highly respected.
Replacing whole furler - Line, Drum, extrusion and top swivel. Hopefully no forestay components need replacing (freshwater).

Hope you do not mind if I hijack this post - I have an balky continuous-loop furler (original Hood from what I can tell). I was going to replace with a single line, but this post makes me think I might be better off fixing what I have - it needs a top-roller cap and a new line. Any thoughts? I do use the reefing capability of the continuous-loop - I have seen that single-line furlers are not designed for reefing - is that the case?
Suggestions welcome! Thanks!

Aaron,
Here is the link to the upgrade. It was just for the bottom section

I replaced mine several years ago when the continuous line when furled and cleated would unfurl.in heavy wind. I suspect you can get additional parts as I believe they are now manufacturing in NH @ Pompanette

I upgraded to the Searfurl 808SL. It came with all pieces lower unit, extrusions and upper bearing. Was about 40% less than without the upgrade.

Has anyone got a suggestion as how to replace the drum on my older Hood furling system fitted on my 1992 Catalina 36 and where to order a new one in Europe/the Neterhlands? It's about 30 years old and works relatively well, but not well enough that I trust it enough in windy conditions.
Kind regards,

Floris;
You might try sending these folks in Tampa, Florida and email and ask for the name of the current parts distributor in Europe. They are usually very helpful. Questions to Corporate hedadquarters in New Hampshire on Hood products directs you to Tampa. Use the hoodyachtsystems@pompanette.com address.
