PO's on our Mk 1.5 did away with the original reefing set up so I must set up something new. Would appreciate counsel and pictures on innovative (read as easy to use) configurations whether stock or modified.

I have the original reefing on my Mark I, Caprice, as described in the Catalina Handbook which works just fine for me. If I had to reinstall a reefing system I would do it the same way. I am sure the guys on he West Coast who use reefing a lot more than I do would have several variations of reefing systems.

Jim,
I was not satisfied with the reefing system as it came from the factory, so I change it on Julandra. I installed eye-straps and bullseye fairleads on the mast, and then extra blocks at the base of the mast to bring the reefing lines back to the cockpit. I also installed an extra pair of rope clutches for the reefing lines. I wanted two reefing lines for each set of reef points, so that the shape of the main could be more precisely controlled. I also wanted the reefing lines at the tack to pull the sail down AND forward, to flatten it. Pulling the sail only down puts extra strain on the sail slugs. I've taken a couple of pix and posted them at: http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=1AasmrRk0cMXFg¬ag=1
They are acattered thru pix #93-108. For the type of sailing I do, the lines for the first set of reef points are installed all the time, but the lines for the second set of reef points are stored below until needed. Hope this helps.
PS-It might help to edit your signature. I had to look you up in the membership roster to know what to call you!!

Thanks for the full range of ideas- I'll post my solution if it is sufficiently elegant!
