Propane Sensor

My boat has a sensor installed to detect small levels of propane in the bilge area. It has started to give a lot of false alarms, and I have disconnected it. I am pretty sure it is defective, because when I turn off the valve on the propane bottle, the pressure gage reading is constant for more than 12 hours.

I don't remember other discussions of propane sensors in this forum. Do other members have them installed? Was the sensor original equipment from Catalina?

I suspect that the sensor was installed when the PO installed a permanent propane radiant heater in the cabin. When I had the boat surveyed for purchase, the surveyor did not like propane heating system in boats. I removed the heater right after buying the boat, and would now like to remove the sensor as well. Any recommendations?

I have heard that if the sensor gets damp it will malfunction. The bilge being what it is, I wonder if that has been your problem. I installed a sensor (my first task after buying the boat) down low near the stove, and we have never gotten a false alarm.

There were times when I would get a false sensor alarm and it turned out to be that the batteries were not holding a charge. The sensor I have is designed to sound when it does not have enough power.
