mast spacers

I have owned my 1983 catalina36 since 2001 and a crewmen pointed out that I did not have the spacers to keep my mast from moving. where do I get the information on the size and shape and how to put them in .

Mike:
I am not sure on the sizes but what they are is wooden wedges. I have 6 on our mast. If you look up from the inside I can see them, But the boot covers them on the out side. The mast on ours sets in the middle of the hole. Then I tuned it using a tension gauge.

Mike,

You can probably make yourself a set. six is a minimum, eight or ten is better.

The wedges are oak, about 3/4" wide (no doubt cut from a 3/4" board)
they are about 2" long 1/4" and about 3/4" at the top. A lip at the very top is helpful so if the mast shifts when you are driving them in, they catch at the lip instead of falling into the cabin.

These measurements are from memory, I just installed mine last week.
If there is someone out there who has not installed their wedges yet, perhaps they can give you exact measurements.

To install, slide the mast boot up, drop in the wedges around the mast to center it and gently tap them in to wedge the mast tight.

Mike,
Ummm. . . Just in case my memory is faulty, you may want to consider making two sets of wedges, one set that is 3/4" at the top and one set that is 1" at the top.

The other dimensions are fine, but with wedges, a wedge that is slightly too big is a lot more useful than one that is slightly too small.

I would hate for you to get all the way to the boat only to find that all your wedges drop cleanly through the gap to the cabin floor.

Oh, and take a good sharp knife with you too . .

Hi Just replaced mine which were missing or had fallen out 3/4 to one inch or larger then tappered to the bottom and center mast and tap them in.

Mike,

I replaced several wedges this year; a couple were too thin and fell out. The above information matched what I did. I think I used a hard maple board. I would suggest making several extras of slightly different sizes and also take along a small saw to make adjustments if needed.
