Listing boat??

If anyone could help me!! I have my 1989 boat sitting on a mooring in Morro Bay. I've had it for one year. When I bought it I had it surveyed. All checked out fine except for the fact that the boat did list about 3 inches to the port. I was told that the holding tanks may be full. Also, the pervious owner had quite a few things stored on the port side that were most likely the cause. Well, all is emptied and it still lists. I'll try anything!! Thanks for any input.. David

David,
I noted the same thing several years ago when I took possesion of a 1990 MK1 hull # 1056. If you survey your boat I'm sure you will note that the holding tank, hot water tank, fuel tank, and a portion of the water tank under the aft berth favor the port side. Also note that you have the galley and its equipment, refridgeration, LP tank, Head, etc. are also located on the port side. One water tank a couple of battieries and a chart table are about all you have on the starboard side. Back when I had this concern I wrote into the forum and I believe a Robert Scott informed me that it was a common problem. Tom Sokoloski also mentioned that I could load the starboard side with plenty of drinking fluids and perhaps this will help.

Somewhere back then I was interested in increasing the battery power and I noted that the newer Catalinas had 2 4D batteries which weighed in at about 110#'s each, that got me to start thinking! This problem was not an issue for the MK11 design.

If you use 7#'s for all fluids I calculated a 329# difference from port side to starboard side. I then found a person, whom I had stand on the starboard side that weighed close to 250#'s and the list was barely noticeble. I then went and made the decision to move forward with 4 golf cart batteries and a 12V starter battery. That gave me approximately 250# additional #s to the starboard side. I also replaced the #4 battery wires with a heavier wire, which assisted in the weight addition. I'm including the layout from my owners manual so that you can evaluate your weight distribution. Hope this helps!

Gary.. great information and everything you mentioned is without a doubt my problem! I do have 4 Trojan batteries that I just put in on the port side in the compartment above deck too. They weigh a ton and I'm sure with all the other things you mentioned they all add up to why she is listing! I think I'll try to move some of the things stored to the starboard side. I thank you for taking the time to help me and also for the link. It's so great to have people respond to questions posted on the C36 Forum. Thanks again and have a great week, David

David,
I read your post, and I became curious. Did you really mean to say that you added 4 Trojan batteries to the port cockpit locker? It's your boat and obviously you can do whatever you want to it, but I'm finding it hard to come up with a reason for putting them there. Batteries, along with other heavy items, are generally placed as low and as close to the center of the boat as possible. The port cockpit locker is neither low nor close to the center. I think that if you move the 4 Trojan batteries to where they are designed to be, and/or under the forward game seat, your list problem will go away. Placing the batteries near the electrical panel also shortens the wire runs. Below is a link to some photos I took of the additional batteries I added to Julandra (photos 21-29). Hope this helps.

David, First as Tom has said "its your boat" but I would move the battieries. Based on your description you added the 250# additional to the side that did not need it. I'm wondering what you did with the batteries you had under the aft game seat ?Here are a couple of pictures of how I ended up. First one is the four batteries in the aft game seat and the other is the starter or emegency battery under forward game seat, as I use the main bank for everything.

Thank you all!! Several things contributed to the placement to the batteries. First of all.. I'm just learning and quickly I might add! Secondly, when I bought the boat the previous owner had all the wiring "perfectly and professionally" installed to the portside compartment above deck. He had a slip and used shore power and never got around to putting in the 4-6V batteries. So after I took ownership I thought it only made sense to finish the project he started. Especially, being on a mooring. Thirdly, a neighbor was redoing his 2008 40 motorhome and sold me the 4 6V Trojan's in perfect condition for $80. Total! I installed an inverter and a solar panel. I have have spent many a night on her and not really draining the batteries. I throughly enjoyed the input, pictures and great advice. Looks like I'm moving my batteries below deck. Thanks again, David
