Floor boards

Can anyone tell me about the floor boards in a Catalina 36, 2002? What is the coating? It seems like a laminate rather than a urethane type of finish. Is there a source of pre-cut boards?

I had a section of the floorboards in the V-berth delaminate on my 2002 and there is no easy way to replace them. I thought it would be simple... call Catalina and order a new one... but no, they wanted me to ship the old one out to them as a pattern. I had to get a whole 4x8 panel of teak with holly strips and a 1/8 plain panel and laminate them together to get the required thickness, then I used the old piece as a pattern.

I don't know what they use on the surface but I would be really careful about sanding them. The top laminate is VERY thin. If you use a very fine sandpaper, you can use pretty much what you want on them as a finish I would think, though someone else might have a different opinion.

Also, be aware that for whatever reason, they never sealed the bottom sides or edges. You will eventually get moisture in there and ruin the boards. You need to really varnish them or fiberglass them.

Hugh,

That's the great thing about the C36IA: somebody has probably already been there before you and done it. AND, what's best...they've written about it and photographed it. Go to the C36IA home page and follow these instructions.

1. Click on the Articles tab on the C36IA home page, and then...
2. Click on the Upgrades selection.
3. Page through this large selection of upgrades and you will find, somewhere in the middle, an article and photos on this topic. (I'd post a link to it here for convenience, but then I'd be cheating you out of the pleasure of looking over the many things owners have done to upgrade their boats.)

Thanks for the info. I thought that that was the case. They are not high end boards.

Aren't you kind for making me look for it. I hadn't been to the "Articles" section before so it was worth while. It looks like making them from the originals as templates is the way to go.

Hugh, yes. That is exactly what I was doing. Not because I was trying to be impolite or uncaring, but because it is a voyage of discovery. It was worth the exploration in other corners of the website, wasn't it?

Now if I could just figure out how to access the old message board archives...

Larry,
Let me help you with a little "voyage of discovery". Click on the Community tab on the home page. One of the articles on that page is C36IA Forums. In that article is a link to the "old" forums page. It's still here for our reference, but is not active (it's read only). Hope this helps.

West Expoy makes something called G flex 850
I sealed all my edges with this and then primed and painted the underside. As stated in other article if you dont the moisture will penatrate through to the finished side. (trust me on that) seing I refinished the complete cabin sole, only to have to strip 3 peices again because of just that reason MOISTURE.
