Seeking assist.
I am attempting to adjust the shift (F, N, R) cable on my 1987 Catalina 36. At present, when I shift into F, the transmission 'barely' engages and sometimes slips back into neutral.
I took the aft bedding out and looked at the transmission. The cable adjustments is difficult to get to as the quarters are tight, etc. That said, I am able to determine the cable adjustment appears to be maxed out. I then took apart the Edson binnacle and attempted to adjust there. While I did pick up some minor improvement, it is clear I need another 1-2" of adjustment.
Does the cable need to be replaced? Seems like a bit of a big job?
Thanks!@

Al,
Is there anything blocking the handles on the binnacle? You should be able to move the shift handle forward enough to have the tranny fully engage. In fact, it's a bad thing if it doesn't. Look in the technical section of the website, under Important Notices. One of the notices pertains to this subject. It references the M35, and you have an M25, but the concept is the same. With less than a full "throw" you may develop problems in the future.
Another thought. Are there two holes drilled in the shift lever on the tranny? If you have a limited amount of travel in the cable, moving the clevis connection to the "inner" hole will increase the throw (at the cost of being slightly harder to shift due to less leverage).
Changing the cable is not that big a deal, if that's what you need to do. Order a new one from Edson. I think they are 14' long, but check with Edson to be sure. Use the old one as a messenger. You don't have to take out the aft water tank, but you do have to be very careful with the "saddle clamp" inside the pedestal. Loosen the nut on the outside of the pedestal, but not all the way. If the saddle clamp drops into the pedestal, it is a BEAR to retrieve (don't ask how I know this!!). Hope this helps.

Thanks Tom for your valuable input on this matter of shifters and cables on our boats; we all appreciate it. Can you recall the member's name that had machined a piece to add on the throttle lever on the right? He had posted an excellent example of how he modified the overall length of the shaft so that you can push the lever as far as it goes. Presently my Edson ss post prevents it from being placed all of the way forward.

Tom,
Thank you! I will takexalook at the fear le er to see if it has two holes. My edition pedestal guard is blocking the shift lever from moving any further forward. Cheers!

Glad you explained, Al. I thought you were in such despair at the thought of replacing the cable that you were 'hitting the bottle' pretty hard. ;)

Ha!
I know what you mean....I am in despair, but I tend to limit my intake to a glass or two of wine on weekends! Without my glasses on, my tap/touch on the Iphone leaves a little to be desired!
I actually have another couple of questions:
1. I am looking for a Catalina International Pennant (bungee?) for Last Resort. At one time I thought I saw a place on this site where I could order one? Any thoughts?
2. What are your thoughts on adding radar? I have a Raymarine CW-90, etc...buy never added the radar feature. I sail in SF Bay, but frankly not often...so I hesitate to spend the dollars, etc if it is not a compelling investment, etc
Frankly, I wish I had stumbled on this site two years ago when I commenced 'bringing back' Last Resort to sailing condition. It would have been a great help and I think many of the projects I did complete, along with the successes and challenges might have been helpful all way 'round.
Really do appreciate the help!@
Friday?, ah, back to my 8 am glass of Cabernet! ;-)
cheers!

Al,
If you go to this website's home page, you will see a tab for "store" at the top. You will find the burgee ordering details there.
As for RADAR, I cannot offer much advice. We are in an area where fog is not that prevalent and it is not something I am looking to add.

Thank You!
Just ordered the burgee.
Still investigating radar....pretty expensive once you add in a gimble mount, etc...
Thanks!

Because of the importance of the radar topic, I have split off posts regarding radar from this Edson cables thread, and moved them to a new thread called "To Radar or not to Radar". Other opinions on radar are earnestly invited at the new thread. (And thanks for your input, Stu.)
