My steering makes loud 'creaking' noises when under load. I've done some careful listening, and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the idler wheels directly under the pedestal. I've checked them, lubed them and they can easily be turned, even with the cables in place.
The idler wheels have a fair amount of side to side play, eg., they can be pushed to one side or the other at least 1/8". There is no indication of wear.
I know I need to get someone to get into the aft cabin, with the steering cable cover removed, and see what is making the noise. I've been singlehanding, so haven't been able to do that yet.
The 'creaking' is quite loud and annoying, plus it bugs me that something's not right. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Edson used to use brass/bronze pins as axles for the idler pulleys. Over time they wear causing play in the cable, unwanted rubbing, and sloppy steering. I would inspect yours to make sure that isn't the problem. The new pins are stainless.
