Check valves

On my Mk1 Catalina 36 and also on the Catalina 30 I owned, Catalina used a what appears to be a metal check valve. On the 30 they used a plastic assembly and I have never been able to find a supplier.

Currently my boat being of 1990 vintage they appear to be corroding and the one for the galley foot pump intake fell apart. My question is, is there a direct replacement... and where have you been able to get them? I see Whale has an inline and I am wondering if there is a difference in the new ones or was there an advantage to the older style?

The only check valve I have is to prevent the hot water in the tank from back flowing into the pressure pump. This is a Whale valve. Plastic, cheap and reliable. I'm not sure why you would have one on the foot pump. A proper anti syphon loop would suffice for salt water intake (be sure to use below waterline hose for insurance purposes). A tee inserted in the fresh water line running under the foot pump gives you fresh water from the tanks. Hope this helps.

I just installed an inline check valve on my back up bilge. I found it at Lowe's and the price was not too bad, especially compared to what I found with West and Defender.

There is more than one check valve on our boats. One is for the hot water heater, the other is for the shower sump. Others may be in the fridge foot pump line.

Here's pictures of both our old and new one, see both pages, please: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4114.0.html

These are for the shower sump on our C34.

Thanks for the pictures Stu. The black plastic is what they used on the Cat 30 I had. As I said the ones that are on the 36 are made of metal of some sort. The one I want to replace is the one for the Galley foot pump for the seawater at the sink. On this boat they have it split off the raw water intake and I believe it is set up so you do not draw air into the raw water cooling supply. The new one in your second pic I have used a similar in the head intake.
I am just wondering if there was anything special about these metal ones that I should know.

Gary, unless you have a manufacturer or model number or picture, no way to tell. A check valve's a check valve, except for my note about my selection of the one that is serviceable a lot easier than the older black ones.
