had to replace alternator belt. Friend loaned me a neat kit (3 parts) that pressed against opposing belt wheels, and expands like a turnbuckle. Once expanded, the bolts for the alternator and bracket can be tightened down before removing the tensioner kit.
It was stamped "Pittsburgh #01278"
would like one on my boat, can't find a source
can anyone help?

Stu...you are the MAN.
Those photos are exactly what I borrowed from a friend.
Will be going to the JC Whitney catalog with the next click.

you probably have figured this out by now, but JC Whitney no longer sells this item. You can get one at MSC Industrial Supply www1.mscdirect.com I ordered one yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning! How do they do that?
$18 plus about $10 shipping.

Not to discourage anyone one from spending money on man toys but I have a big screwdriver that doubles as a pry bar. I just stick that behind the alt casing and against the block at the tip and pry up then with a ratchet in my left hand I tighten the bottom bolt then the top one. I have a cricket to check belt tension and I can get it past spec with that method. The cricket is more valuable to me than a tensioner.
Not having time to buy the tensioning tool, before my launch date last Sunday, I took a small bottle jack, and put the base on the spindle of the crankshaft pully. With the belt preventing the alternator from turning I could put adequate tension against the central outer edge of the pully and by hand pumping the jack got sufficient tension easily.
May experiment with using an old large turnbuckle. While both are cheap, that bottle jack is a heavy "tool" to have as more clutter lowering the waterline. Same idea stolen from the tool suppliers.

The pry bar approach works on the M35 engine alternator arrangement, not so much on the M25 series brackets.
