Just purchased a 1999 Catalina MkII and I thought I saw all the issues during my self inspection and survey, but one caught me by surprise this weekend (besides the small leak in the galley sink drain).
When doing a thorough cleaning of the aft cabin I noticed a hairline crack along the foot of the aft cabin bed area. Right where the ceiling meets the "wall" at the foot of the bed. It looks similar to the hairline crack you see in homes along the ceiling and wall joints when the house settles a bit.
It caught me by surprise at it was the end of long day of "cleaning" and I didn't take any pictures. It has been on my mind all day and I wanted to try out my membership to the association and see if other have seen similar things.
BTW there are no abnormal moisture reading along where the crack is on the joint.
Thanks,

Let's make sure we understand where your crack is appearing. In the aft cabin of the Mk II, there is a 'wall' on the port side of the vessel, in my boat covered by a wood panel. That's what I think of as the 'foot' of the aft cabin bed. Is this what you're talking about? If so, the 'crack' you're describing is a gelcoat crack at the top of this panel??? You mean it is visible, i.e., not covered by the wooden panel itself?

Larry,
Yes, this crack is on the port side and is visible. It is not behind the wooden panel. The only reason I saw it was I was on my back looking at the "ceiling" with my head at the foot of the bed.
Would you think this simply a void in the gelcoat / fiberglass or something more serious?
Thanks,
Ralph Rye

I think we'll need a photo. Is it a fine line in the gelcoat, or something deeper?

Larry,
Well I am a little embarrassed, I went up to the boat today as I couldn't stop thinking this might be a major issue. I grabbed a flashlight and climbed all the way in the back of the berth and ...... its only a pencil line made by the builders. I am sticking with the story that is was a long day on Sunday when I saw it and I was tired. Doesn't help that I have been worried since the survey that I missed something.
Thanks for reply.
