I have a 1998 C36 Mk II. The windlass (Maxwell, Freedom 800) only as an "up" switch (the foot type one). I want to install a "down" switch or change to another type of switch altogether (possibly the wand type). I see that Maxwell has a switch that goes both up and down and also has a counter. I'm thinking of installing this one. I would need to install a solenoid also. My question is:
Is the only access to the wiring for the windlass through the hole where the present switch is? If that is the case, I'm not sure how I'd be able to fix in place and wire a solenoid down there. The bulkhed forward of the V-berth has a mirror covering it. Can I remove the mirror and cut a hole in that bulkhead for access? Any suggestions or information?

I am sure you will get replies from those who have actually done some work in this area but on my 2005 MK11 it is quite easy to remove the bulkhead. There are about 6 wood screws as I recall and it was necessary to loosen the trim at the sides to ease the panel out. Once done, you should have no trouble accessing the winch and wiring.

hi guys,
I am going to replace the chain wheel for the same boat C36mk2, my boat was around 1999 model, when i call up the Maxwell supplier in Hong Kong and found out that there were 2 models of chain wheel for RC800. One is 800 another is 800M
1. [800] P100033 Chainwheel for 5/16" Acco G40, Weissenfels short link chain and 9/16" - 5/8" (14mm - 16mm) rope
2. [800M] P100034 Chainwheel for 8mm PWB Grade L, DIN766, Bradlink and Beaver short link chain and 9/16" (14mm) rope
Any of you guys know which one was the original factory installed version?
Other question is any of you guys installed the chain meter? will it work if i only got the "up" switch?:p
Many thx.
Cheers
Jason
John, access is relatively easy via the V-berth forward bulkhead. Once the bulkhead has been removed, you can even put the mattress back in place and work in comfort.
Please thoroughly document and photograph your installation to share herein, as others (I, for example) are very interested in doing the same project.

I will do that, Icbrandt. Thanks for everybody's input. I should be getting to this in the next week or so and hopefully will have it finished about a week after that (or less).

I finally finished this project and sent an article along with some photos to Tom Soko. Basically, after figuring out the wiring it was a pretty straighforward job.

I found a picture (taken by my cell phone) of my 1996 MKII when I put in the washdown pump fitting. I did need to remove all the headliner trim (Front and sides) before I could remove the face cover. It is only a decorative cover. The 1997s and newer models have a different anchor locker design.
Hope it helps future projects.

John (and others),
You did a GREAT job writing up the article. It's now posted in the Articles > Upgrades section of the website.
