3 insturmnet NAVPOD.

I hope to end up with 3 instruments at the helm station, all Raymarine:
ST-4000 autohelm, ST-60 plus Wind, and the tridata.

My question is:
Is the NAVPOD really the only choice we have for instrument mounting?

I would also like to mount the radar (Furuno 1621 MkII) on a mount at the helm.

To do this I think I need a new pedestal mount.
What choices do I have for that?

Thanks again

Bob,
When I bought my '94 C36 last season, I upgraded the instruments with a Raymarine C80 and radar. Unfortunately the boat was bought in Annapolis and I needed to sail it up to Rhode Island so time was short to complete the upgrade. I had two headaches with the upgrade. The first was that the sensor cables were short when I changed the straight pedestal to an angle pedestal. I cut 3 inches off the angle pedestal to make them reach. That was a bad idea. I recommend reworking the cables rather than cutting the pedestal because now I have to remove and open the navpods to pull out the C80 and sensors to get enough room to remove the compass cover and align the compass to correct for the fields created by the C80. Also I found that the two legs of a 1 inch pedestal does not have enough room to accommodate all the cables when one of them is a one-half inch radar cable. It appears the the newer Catalinas are using larger diameter pedestal tubing. This may effect the model of Navpods required.
As I learned from my dogs, experience is a difficult teacher, first you get the test, then you get the lesson.
Good luck,

I just changed the ST60 mounts on my MKll. I had a three instrument pod and a larger pod which held a Garmin GPS (182) and the autopilot. Because of some poor planning how the Garmin and Autopilot were installed, I had to swap out that Navpod with a precut one for the C80 upgrade and a new precut to house all four ST60 units. With a 1.25" angle guard (125) Ocean marine unit, I was able to complete the installation without getting the larger guard.
There are some other choices for attaching individual items to the guard however I wanted a clean integrated installation without bits hanging off that could get in the way. Recabling is the real issue, finding the correct cable size and color as well as tracing the cable runs can have you running around many different stores. A tone generator is a great tool to have for this, preferably one that does not need the circuits turned off and can trace live cables. You can usually find them in Home Depot stores in the Network/Electronics area for about $45 for the one that traces inactive circuits to $90 for the one that can trace live circuits. It removes much of the challenge trying to figure out which cable does what... and do not forget the labeler to mark all of the runs after you have spent the time tracing them.
