12 Volt Illum. red rocker switch, pre Mk II

folks,
have #1234, built fall '92.
propane solenoid switch on 12 v. panel requires several clicks to activate propane solenoid. Presuming problem is a dying 12 v. switch and not the solenoid (switch replacement may be simplest first attempt to fix).

Talked with Dennis at Seaward Products. SP doesn't stock the red illuminated 12 v. rocker switch anymore.
He has them without illumination.
Having trouble finding a source for red illuminated 12 volt rocker switch that fits into that panel.

Want a red illuminated switch.
Original switch measures 9/16 h x 7/8 w (or pretty close)
Anyone know of a source?

Thanks,
Brian Giersch

Brian, I think the newer boats don't use an illuminated switch, but rather a standard Circuit Breaker-type switch in the power panel, but with red LED installed in the panel immediately to the tight of the switch. If you have difficulty finding the illuminated switch, it would be simple to install and LED.

Brian,

It's a little bit more pricey, but you might want to consider a propane monitoring system connected to a solenoid switch at the tank. The unit has a sensor you mount near the stove or near the bilge. The sensors sounds an alarm and shuts the system down when it detects propane in the area. I bought mine at Svendsen's in Alameda. I know West Marine and other chandleries carries them.

The unit also has addtional ports to add a few more sensors. If there is a leak or stray gas the unit sounds an alarm at the same time shutting off the propane via the solenoid. The monitoring unit has built in LED's to show you status and can be mounted where you wish. I mounted mine within arms reach of the stove for ease of turning it on and in the event of an emergency close enough to shut off.

I went ahead and spent the extra $$$$ for safety and peace of mind...and in the future plan on adding on at least one more sensor...

Brian,
Use dogpile.com to search for your switch. There is a plethora of companies that sell all types of switches via the internet. Many companies provide detailed specs (size, ratings). A suitable red rocker switch should be easy to find.

Have a look at McMaster Carr's cataloge or on line. I think there P/N switch 7395k43 will work. It is shown to have a 24 volt lamp in it so it may be dimmer than the one in your switch. The bulb is replacable so you can put a 12 volt bulb in. The price of the switch is shown as $6.57.

As for your problem I would be more suspect of a sticking slolenoid being your problem. Does the light iluminate in the switch when you turn it on?
If it does why not check the output with a voltmeter and see if you get voltage out of the switch or bypass the switch to test the solenoid. The solenoid gets intermitent use and with things mechanical on boats thing that do not get moved often often don't move/get stuck.

Mouser.com has any kind of electrical device you can think of; takes some time to get used to their online catalog. You can find parts to build your own VHF radio if you'd like.
