What is this? Help needed.

Does anybody know what this is? I found it in the bilge under my galley sink. Looks like some kind of valve, but I'm struggling as to what it fell out of and what I need to fix:

Are those two pieces or both sides of the same piece? Looks like a back check valve going into the freshwater pump if it were broken in two. I had this happen and replaced it with a bronze valve.

It's one piece, back and front. The freshwater pump is still working -- would it still work if this had fallen off? I found it under the sink, so aft of the pump, not sure how it would have gotten there.

Note: I haven't *noticed* anything broken...

Hi David:

It looks like part of an in-line check valve. Since you found it under the sink, it may have been from the fridge drain line that connects to the sink drain through hull fitting. Perhaps the previous owner had a failure of the valve and replaced it, but left the parts behind.

Is there supposed to be a check valve between the whale pump for the fridge drain and the sink drain thru-hull? There are two hoses connected together with clamps under the sink, but no check valve.

I did unexpectedly have water in my fridge about a week ago, but I think it might be from something leaking. It pumped out just fine.

Not sure what the diameter is but I am wondering if it the bottom of a hand dingy pump. Such as what West Marine sells. Should be about 1 1/2 in diameter.

I have a check valve between the Whale pump and the through hull fitting and I expect the MK II boats should be the same. Perhaps a MK II owner can confirm this.

Thanks all. For those with a check valve, especially on the Mk II, is it mounted basically right below the sink? My boat has a hose going to the sink drain thru-hull and a hose going to the fridge drain, and they are connected by a plastic connector piece and hose clamps right under the sink.

Seems suspicious that this isn't one piece of hose. There is clearly no check valve on my line.

Not sure if there is supposed to be a check valve in the fridge drain or not BUT; one thing I always gripe about is that when I pump out the fridge drain water backs up into my sink! :(

So... I'll be glad to know IF there is supposed to be a check valve in-line or not.

The "connector" you mention is probably a check valve. Whale check valves are very simple and look just like connectors, where you wouldn't expect to find one. We have the same thing, which I discovered when I re-routed the hose. Remove one side and take a look.

Is this about 5/8 - 1" in diameter? If it is I think it is an aerator for your faucet.
Maybe maybe not?

It's a little more than an inch in diameter. I don't think it is the aerator. Still trying to figure out exactly what it is, but realizing it's probably part of something the PO removed and then left this behind...

David. I took a picture of our friends hand bilge pump and your picture is just as I mentioned. It is the bottom of the hand pump. If I could figure out how to get rhe picture from my smart phone I would post it here. I can send it to you if you like.

David,
The type of pump that Randy is referring to is this:
[URL]http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?produ...
or something very similar. The piece you found is a one-way valve that attaches to the bottom of the pump body. It allows water up into the tube on the upstroke, but does not allow water to be pushed out on the downstroke. The rubber flap is on the inside. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys! The hand-bilge is now the leading explanation -- probably something the PO had. I may take it down to West Marine and compare, just to make sure.
