Waaaay off topic

Is anyone else into woodworking? I am in the process of converting my garage into a woodshop and am looking for ideas on a drill press. I guess I could tie this into the Catalina 36 as my MK I has a teak interior and I am sure that at some point I will attack a wood project on the boat.

Bill,
Bill Miller, of Magic III fame, has been doing woodworking for a number of years. I don't know how often he visits this site, but he is active on the email list server.

Bill, I have been a woodworker for years. I have all of the hand and power tools and find it very relaxing and gratifying when a project is accomplished successfully. My wife and I owned a Catalina 25 and I happened upon a hugh bundle of teak strips at a garage sasle of all places, that were approx 2" wide and about a 1/4" thick. I ran them through my planer and groved them. After that I insulated the entire cabin, fiberglassed stringers to the inside of the hull and finished the enterior with teak. Then, I countersunk screws and plugged them. The enterior of Cest Le Vie was absolutly beautiful! I have completed just a few projects on our Catalina 36 Carpe Diem and will be submitting pictures and descriptions before the Christmas holidays. I have found that you have to have the proper tools to complete a project and enjoy the tme spent in completing them.

I am more a rough carpenter, I do have a buddy who is a fine cabinet maker and he introduced me to a store in Alameda near my marina.

Any of you wood workers in the Bay Area may want to check out the Japanese Woodworker on Clement a block east of Grand in Alameda. They have some amazing tools at very reasonable prices, block planes, miterboxes and some of the finest saws I have ever seen. I purchased a keyhole saw there when installing a new stereo and chart plotter in my boat, I needed to cut out some fiberglass foward of the circuit breaker panel and this saw went through it like butter.

On my last 36 I did a ton of woodwork, I think I kept H & L in business for a while. Problem with boatwork, though, is that there are very few straight lines that can benefit from nice bench tools. I did almost everything with a hand saber saw because of the curves of the hull, etc. That plus a compound mitre saw for mouldings. As far as the drill press, I don't think you can go wrong with Craftsman, and Sears has some pretty good sales from time to time.
