Upholstry cloth material

I have a 1985 Catalina 36 and plan to re-upholster all of the upholstery, V birth, Salon and aft stateroom. As I will not be back at the boat until October and would like to purchase the cloth material now. Does anyone know how much material I require? Also what cloth material have others used when they have re-upholstered and would recommend?

I did a practice run over the past winter re-upolstering all the cushions in our 1983 Mk1. I used 10oz canvas painters tarps sized 9X12. I re- did all cushions except the two which fill in the middle area that makes the game table into a couch. I used 4 tarps in all and had some left over. Hope that helps. SUNBRELLA makes a lighter grade fabric than that used to make dogers biminis sailcovers ect. It sill has the stain fighting whatever of the regular but its more like upolstry fabric. So Bob, you should paint the boat now since you've already got things well covered!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Keith, my wife and I had all of the cushions redone just a bout a month ago. Here is what I would suggest. First of all go to Sailrite (www.sailrite.com) and order your material directly from them. I paid $17 @ yard. It took 20 yards and then I located an upholstery shop and asked him how much he would charge. He just happened to need the business and said that he would do all of the cushiions (I believe there were 14) for a grand total of $700. I said you have a deal and they came out looking great! I have tried to upload a picture but my fiel is too large apparently. I could email you a photo of mf the end result if you like.

Thanks Glenn
I have looked at the Sailrite web page and we will probably order their material. If you would send me pictures of your upholstery job it would be greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions you have would also be appreciated.
Thanks

I replaced my interior on my C30 and I found it was A LOT cheaper just to go to Catalina. They sent a package of the materials available you could choose from and then, since its not custom, it was much less in cost than my local shop. At the same time you can get the foam replaced since that gets rather funky over the years too.

I am assuming they still do this as it was about 10 years ago.

You also save by having them shipped to a marina rather than a home address for reasons I don't understand.

You might look into a product called "ultra leather" for the main cabin. We had our cushions covered with it a couple of years ago, and are very pleased with it. It looks like leather, but is softer, easy to clean, and breathable. It is a polyurathane product.

It does cost a lot more than Sunbrella, but the look and feel might be worth it to you.
