I just bought a MKi a few days ago in Long Beach, CA, and Im in Fresno (4 hours away). I want to stick a new name on the boat by ordering some vinal letters, but I don't know the proper size to order. I suppose it would depend on the width of the transom (where the name will go) but I don't have access to the transom to measure it.
How big should I order my letters? How wide is the Transom? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks!
BTW: boat name is GENESIS so you can see how many letters are in the name.

Also, What do I paint over the old name with? Do I need to sand it? Do I have to take it out of the water?

Rodney, it is easy to change the name.
You can use finger nail polish remover or acetone to remove the existing vinyl letters.
If they are painted-on, I am not sure what can be done. Maybe 400 grit san paper used very lightly.
The amount of space available is 31" long and 4" high.

If the old name is vinyl, try heating the letters with a heat gun... they should peal off. If paint, I used oven cleaner on the paint and then use a teflon pad to wipe off. Obviously try not to get the cleaner on other parts of the hull.
Be sure to go thru the correct process for renaming your boat or the Sea Gods will frown on you and bring bad luck. If you Google "renaming a boat" you will get the process.

If your name is painted on, West Marine (and other marine supply stores) sell paint remover specially formulated for fiberglass hulls....no sanding involved. The BoatUS web site might be a good resource for vinyl name decals, however you do need to know the length and height you have available.

I just removed my 84's vinyl lettering using a heat gun and then peeling off the old lettering. I removed the residue on the gelcoat with acetone and a clean rag. Fairly simple.
On size, I recommend taking measurements off a transom whose appearance you like. Guessing what size will work for you is tricky. Pay attention to the overall width on the order form. Good luck!
If your boat is documented with the Coast Guard there are specific size requirements - be sure and look them up
