We had an electrical failure this week that I thought I should share. The 30 amp shore power inlet plug developed a short that melted both the plug and shore power cord socket.
The wiring was inspected late December when I did a function test on the galvanic isolator. Over the last week we had strong winds with our boats moving around at the dock. At one point I checked and winds were over 50 mph and they were most likely much higher.
The failure was either (or a combination of) cracked insulation under the strain relief bar or heat build up over the contacts. Both the plug and socket were destroyed before the breaker at the nav station tripped.
I replaced the plug and socket with a Smart Plug which was a job I’d planned for the spring.

We experience a similar shore power issue. Ours was caused by a corroded wire in the transom recepticle. The corrosion increased the electrical resistance and generated heat that charred both the socket and shore power plug. Our boat breaker never tripped. Any sign of heat/discoloring I would advise to check.

Thats why you should install Smart Plugs!! those Marinco style are fires waiting to happen. I think my article on this is in the last MainSheet - (available here in Members area if you are a dues paying member).

Ray,
I have to second what Les and others are saying here regarding a SmartPlug. I put one in and it has turned out to be a wise decision. It connects faster and far more secure. Check it out; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IcbCUKfy9s
