Say it isn't so......

The Mrs has decided she wants a houseboat and has her eye on a 59ft monster "with good bones". How the hell do I get myself out of this?

Bill,

I would ask her if it is OK to tie up to the house boat when you come to visit.

No problem, sell your house, move onto the house boat, tie your Catalina to it. Everybody is happy and you do not need to mow the lawn.

heeeeey! You might be on to something there. I work from home so I have no commute other than to the airport a couple of time a month. She would have to commute to San Antonio everyday but this is her idea so that is on her. House is worth 5x the houseboat so I could bank some cash. Although I would have to rent a place for the woodshop but I could make that work.

Anyone interested in a 2 story, 4 bedroom house in a really good school district on the NW side of San Antonio? Mention C36ia and I'll knock off $25K or throw in a fully functional woodworking shop. Bring your C36 and you can slip next to me at the marina.

I do believe Steve has the answer, Bill. Best of luck!

How about if you bought a 445 or 470? They seem to be pretty roomy, you can live on it, work on it and sail it (where ever you want to go).

That is my desire. I really want to live aboard in New England (Boston or Portland) in the summer and then high tail it to the Carolinas or Florida for the winter. My boss (work) has given me the green light to do so but the other boss has not. Just isn't her thing.....

With a work opportunity like that, it's hard to pass up. My mind would be working overtime trying to figure out how to convince her to give it a go. Would a new diamond something or other make a difference?

Bill, I agree with Allen, surely there is something that she would really like. Diamonds are always good. The idea of having a larger boat, like a 445 on the East Coast makes a lot of sense. My home port is New Bern, NC which is a great jumping off point to practially anywhere. Heck, we could find a slip here for you in this area without a problem during the nasty cold months up north. A lot of my dock mates are preparing to head to warmer climes this next week.

As far as a nice home in the NW part of San Antonio, that's exactly where we used to live, albeit 30 years ago. My wife would love to move back there, BUT not much blue water access, sorry.

I think Steve does have the answer. Based on what what I read in your posts, you want to sell your house and live on a boat. Well, so does your wife. O.K. it is a different boat. This is not so bad. From the picture it looks like a nice comfortable boat, certainly more comfortable than a Catalina 36. I bet it even has a real shower and hanging lockers that clothes will actually hang in.

Now add a nice 28-30 ft weekender/daysailor and a center console for blasting around, a two-three week charter in New England and the West Coast on alternate years and it sounds like a pretty good life.

Just depends on how you look at it.

Show her the size of the fuel tank on that houseboat and let her figure out what it cost to fill it up and how far it goes on a gallon of fuel then she'll rethink a houseboat.

She looked at the size of the water tank and holding tank and was elated!:(

In her mind, longer showers and fewer trips to the pump out station. With a350 gal holding tank, I will be there for freakin hours emptying the damn thing. When it comes to fuel and maint, in her mind that is for me to deal with.

You know, given the windage on the houseboat, the downwind performance is probably equivalent to the Catalina 36. I think the Catalina would have it on the upwind leg however. :)

I was talking to a customer about the joys of sailing, he sails in a thin water portion of the bay. He related a story about one of his last sails, stating the wind was gentle at about ten knots, the boat was rocking softly, the sails were set nicely and drawing. He was enjoying the day sipping some nice red wine. It took him about an hour to figure out he was grounded on a mud flat and not moving, though he stated it one of his more pleasant sails.

Bill, you could just tie up the the house boat, set the sails and enjoy, no need for navigation.

So...

If you bought a house boat, what would you name it? The M/V Flotsam, perhaps. The M/V Motel 6? No that's too low class. How about the M/V Holiday Inn Express?

Who makes it Winaboato, Hydrohome, Mortgage Marine or Windage Yachts.
Do you need a Nautical Notory for the purchase? Does it have a basement?
Is this the one that was in that movie HONEY I SUNK THE KIDS?

Poor Bill.

Ooooo crap. I didn't know she actually made the guy an offer on the houseboat. I thought she was still in the wishing phase. She sent me an e-mail from him today that was in response to her offer. I have a race in 2 weeks and I am already in the Master's Invitational for 2010. I will have to find another boat that I can race.

I reluctantly gave her the OK to put the Catalina on the market.

Taking this "Admiral" title a little too seriously, isn't she? ;)

Seriously, looks like it is time to roll with the punches. Good luck!

William, William, William you are going down toooo easy, time to cut your dose of Cybalta in half. I do not know the house boat market at all but, I would think it is fairly depressed. I would also think that you could negotiate a discount that would just about equal the price of an early C36 and keep yours. I know your wife made an offer but, if the broker thought the spouse was going to nix the deal I bet he would renogotiate.
It sounds like you are near giving up an important part of your life. I could be misreading, I know you are a Dingy Racer and maybe you would be just as happy being a Dinghy Racer.

By the By congratulations on the new grand pup.
