Sanibel and Captiva islands

We are looking at taking our winter holiday less south than usual to hopefully cut down on some costs.  Can any one tell us more about Sanibel and Captiva islands in Florida?  Maybe looking to charter for a week or just even rental for a couple of days of sailing and then staying in a hotel or something.   Some co workers here say it is a wonderfull area.

That is a wonderful cruising area and it would be easy to spend a week or more there.  My friend just rented an Island Packet 32 in the area for $1,800 week and cruised that area.

Captiva (bubbleroom.com - orange crunch and red velvet cake!), Cabbage Key, Pelican Bay (Cayo Costa), Tween Waters and lots of anchorages and marinas.

Ross and Joanne,

Sanibel and Captiva are in our backyard, so to speak, and they are great for cruising. The only negative about the whole area is the skinny water. Tidal range varies with the season, but in winter it is typically 2.5-3 feet. The bottom is usually very good holding in clean sand, with occasional muddy sand or grass.

There is plenty to do staying primitive, or going ashore to restaurants, etc.
