New Window Gaskets

I just went through all of the articles and project websites and was surprised that there are no articles on replacing the window gaskets. After a 2 year drought and an incredibly hot summer, we finally received some heavy rain here in San Antonio last weekend. The heat must have taken its toll on the gaskets and bedding compound as I had several new leaks. One in the mast partner, the starboard aft shroud and some of the windows. I ordered the window gasket kit from Catalina Direct today and will attack this project in October. I would do it sooner but I have a trip to Boston next week and then several Yacht Club functions to deal with.

If someone has already completed this and documented the project, please point me in the right direction. Otherwise, I will take the camera along and do my best to document the procedure and submit it here.

Although I admit I have a certain prejudice against the old style Lewmars, I would suggest that for less effort that you will spend replacing the gaskets in the ports you have, you could replace the whole port with a shiny new Lewmar port with much better seals. You may want to check out an earlier thread from me entitled Leaky Lewmars.

Granted, the new ports cost more than the gaskets. but after you replace the gaskets and the ports still leak, you will be thinking about new ports anyway.

FYI The online price for the ports is considerably less than the advertised prices.

well if you had a mark II i suppose that the information about lewar windows would have more of a bearing but the replacement material from catalina direct deals with the aluminum frames if i'm not mistaken. I have done that job and all i can advise is that you may sure that the ALL of the surfaces are as clean as you can make them. although i didn't do this at the the time i would sael the gap between the hull liner and the cabin sides if i had to do it again, to prevent any chance of a stray leak from getting into that gap. just remember to have ALOT of paper towels on hand and take your time.
good luck !!!
