Mast hole dimensions

Since the mast in Ballena spends more time out of the boat then in the boat, I am going to invest in solar roof vent to cover the mast hole and provide some much needed winter ventilation. Unfortunately, I will not be back down to the boat for a few weeks, and I need to know the size of the mast hole so that I can purchase the appropriate vent and fittings at Home depot before my next visit.

If there is anyone who could measure the width and length of the mast hole in the next week, it would be much appreciated. It does not have to be exact, and I would rather have my vent pipe 1/2" smaller than the hole, than 1/8" too large :)

I will take a picture when it is done for anyone else who is looking to try something similar.

I'll be at the boat tomorrow, Dave. Tune in tomorrow night.

Well, that took a while. The mast hole is 9" long X 6" wide at it's widest points.

I don't know if this helps or not but I measured the outside circumference of the steel at the mast opening (is that the partners?) and it is 30". Need to get a new mast boot.

Mike,
Thanks for taking the time to measure. My plan was to purchase a piece of 4" dia PVC pipe, and put a home depot stovepipe cap on the top. I will mount the PVC through a piece of plywood that will cover the mast hole.

Now I can go ahead and put that together at home.

thanks again,
Dave

You're quite welcome, Dave, sorry it took so long to get back to you.

That is a great idea. I just had a low profile boat cover made and installed and was wondering what I might do to create some air circulation over the winter. I think you nailed it for me (but for next year). How about taking some photos and posting a follow up to your installation - you know with measurements and all (so I can learn from your mistakes)? ;>)

I won't be back to the boat again until April, but I will take some pictures then.
It ended up to be more of a hack job then I would have liked, but it works, and after a half a tube of silicone, does not leak.
