Locker latches

The cockpit lockers in my MKII have conventional hasp latches. We're never really sailing in conditions that potentially involve knockdowns, but it still seems good practice to always have a pin or carbiner in the hasp so a locker will not open to sea in case we go flat to the water.

The new Catalina boats have a nice button latch closure that will not open unless you push in the button. Anybody know if those can be used as a simple "bolt on" replacement for the old style hasp? I know the holes will be different, but I would hope it could go into the same positions and cover up the holes of the original hasp.

I took thin line (1/4" I think), made loops about 4" long and run the loops thru the hasps, pulling the knot thru the loop after it goes thru the hasp. Keeps the lockers closed without scratching and I don't have to fool around with locks which tend to scratch the gelcoat as well as ankles. VERY cheap , no work, and if one gets lost I simply cut off another piece of line and start over.

Duane..

It all goes back to the old story about ipowerboaters and sailors, as any boat show vendor will tell you. Power boaters show up in their tank tops, gold chains and braclets and trophy wives and say "I like that.. I'll take three".... us sailors show up in shorts with docksiders repaired with duct tape and say "I can make that"...

Hey Chuck, would you mind sending a photo next time you're out? Thanks!

Here is a shot showing the basic loop of line and then one drawn thru the clasp.

Chuck,
It's most likely the size of the pic is too large. I don't remember off the top of my head, but we are limited to relatively small pics for uploading.

About 310kb is the largest we can use on this site.

Can't you simply twist the loop 90 degrees?

There's no "correct" way to do it... whatever works for you. I just find this way prevents the loops from getting caught on anything and getting pulled out. Sometimes I just pull the cord thru the hasp and let the loop hang from the knot.
