Live Aboards

My wife and I have been wondering, for some time now, about the number of people on 36IA (or not members) who are live aboard their Catalina 36. We have been contemplating making the leap of moving aboard Carpe Diem.

We know two other couples who have decided to live aboard their 36. It's interesting to hear the comments of our friends and family. We have heard every imaginable statement from "That would be awesome" to "Are you out of your minds??".

Hello Glenn,

I lived aboard my 1986 MK I from about 1987 to 1990. First as a bachelor and later with my then girlfriend & dog. We loved it! I can only imagine how much easier it would be today with smaller electronics like Ipods & flat screens for saving space. We converted the aft cabin to a closet more or less with Rubbermaid drawer units sitting on the bed portion and a clothing rod athwartships for my girl's work wardrobe. We had no trouble with hot water and both showered aboard each morning. We ate at the game table or in the cockpit and kept the main table down to form a pit sofa with lots of added pillows. It was very comfy. She loved to cook, so I built a set of dock steps with a hinged lid which concealed a small A/C freezer. That way we could grocery shop like normal people a week at a time rather than daily. Nice to have frozen veggies or ice cream on hand. All in all it was a great experience and CHEAP to boot. There's nothing like living on a boat to keep you from buying unnecessary stuff. Want a new lamp? Gotta throw away the old lamp first. LOL. Being in SoCal helped with the weather. Even in the "winter" a small A/C heater on the top step of the ladder kept us nice and toasty. Let me know if you have any specific questions as you move along in the decision process.

A dockmate two slips down from us. He doesn't participate in this forum, as far as I know. There are quite a few more C36s in our marina, and since it's legal to liveaboard 36 and bigger, many of them possibly do (although there is a limited list).
