Line bags

Hello all,

I have been researching line bags for the 36 MKII and have seen where there is a 2 bag arrangement on both sides of the cockpit below the coach roof.

Does anyone have any diminsions for line bags? We have 5 lines on the starboard side (main sheet, main haylard, 1st reef line, Asym spin haylard, and traveler line). On our portside, we have 4 lines (jib haylard, vang, 2nd reef line, traveler line).

We are looking to have 2 line bags on each side, and be able to accomodate all the lines. The jib haylard is only used during decommissioning and recommissioning each season.

Can someone please give us some diminsions on line bags, having a total of 4 (or 6 if feasable). We have a business that can make them for us.

Thanks for all that reply,

I can probably get you the dimensions today, but I have a suggestion. Our bags have two pouches per side.

I don't see how you could get your hand inside the pouches if you tried to put more than 2 per side. There is no law that says you cannot have a few lines share the same pouch. It hasn't caused us any grief at all.

Attached is the photo of the bag with each pouch stuffed with towels to show the full shape. Our lines barely use a third of the available volume.

The height is 19 inches, and the width is 19 inches, divided in half. If you square off the opening at the top it measures about 5 inches deep and tapers at the bottom to about 3 inches deep.

I hope that helps.

Duane,

Yes, thank you very much. I first measured about 18-19" wide. I will take your specs to the the company. I was going to go with Annapolis Yacht Supply. Does anyone know anyone else who would make these? Just want to get some different quotes. I'll also try someone local to Deltaville/Kilmarnock if anyone know of a reputable business to use.

Thanks,

Robert,
I think the Catalina parts department either in California or Florida or both has them. Not sure their price is competive but worth checking.

Is that Catalina Direct? If so, I have an account with them and will call them as well.

Thanks,

The factory Catalina parts department is located in Largo, Florida. Catalina Direct is an independent parts and accessories company that is often - but not always - more useful than the factory.

I just was shopping for a new vinyl rub rail and a section of the aluminum rub rail extrusion and found that the Largo plant (Ken), has them in stock and prices run more than 10% less than Cat. Direct. Ken is a little hard to get ahold of sometimes. Emails work best with him. Of course I can also save shipping since I'll be down there for the boat show anyway.

Also, any canvas/boat top fabricator can make them. Get a quote and compare prices...

A few weeks ago Catalina Direct quoted the sheet bags for the 36 at $199 for a set.

Great, thanks for the price and the info. I have the measurements and picture. I'm also going to check with a local sailmaker/canvas maker and get a price from them.

I didn't see anything on CatalinaDirect.com or the Catalina website. Guess I would have to call them.

We made ours out of my old main sail. It was toast and I replaced it this year. A talented friend of ours with a sewing machine had them made in less than a couple of hours.

That sounds really cool. Great use of materials. I'm sure they turned out great!

If you go with the bags from the factory take note of the curve of the bag on one side.

Mine came with a slight curve to "Follow" the curve of the cockpit, so there is a "port" bag and "stbd" bag.

This was not labeled in the shipment and I was lucky to catch it since the mounting brackets are not evenly spaced. Make sure before you drill you have the proper bag on each side.

you might check http://ameriseam.net/index.php they fabricate the seats for zarcor and seem to be reasonable and FAST (turn around in about 1 week). i believe i paid less than 100 buck for two two partition bags. also instead of drilling holes in your cabin side you might want to check out the new "buttons" that sailrite has see: http://www.sailrite.com/YKK-SNAD-40mm-Adhesive-Backed-Domed-Socket or something similar they make an adhesive snad that appears to work good as an attachment point for the cabin side connection precluding the need to drill any holes.... fwiw just checked for a pair it was 97 bucks....

I know its been a while since I posted to this, but I wanted everyone to know how thankful I am for this site and all the good advise.

Thanks Deising for the deminsions and information as well.

We ended up ordering a sheet bag kit from Sailrite that we could modify to match the correct deminsions. We made them over the winter, and just installed them today! It came out great. We were actually able to make the 20" x 19". Thankfully my brother in-law has a Sailrite heavy duty sewing machine.

The reason we went with Sailrite, was the cost and the options. The kit was very reasonable, and we were able to get sunbrella color that matched our trim (the backing), and the pockets were all mesh, which will help with air circulation.

Thanks again for all the advise.

And now that you have some experience sewing those you will find out all types of other things you can make for the boat! ...
That's how I got into canvas making as a retirement business - now I have more work than I want, even just by word-of-mouth! (so watch who you tell... ;)

Howlin,,

I know what you are saying.... I really enjoyed making the bags. In fact, we repaired the rest of the canvas stitching, and replaced the zippers.. I have to say, it was fun... I had to keep telling myself, "This is for the boat, This is for the boat.", in order to justify my enjoyment with sewing,,, as if it were a girly thing...

If I get a sewing machine,, I might start the same small business as you have..

I know this thread has had a long life, but I just had to add my two cents after acquiring sheet bags for Wind Rose that I am pleased with. After placing repeated calls to the parts store at Catalina in St. Pete, I finally got a quote out of them at $175 each!! I couldn't believe my ears and asked them to repeat it several times. I then ordered the Large size Blue Performance sheet bags from my favorite store, Defender Marine. Theirs are 16.5"x 12" made of two color (gray and blue) mesh canvas, heavily padded on the bulkhead side and come with all the mounting hardware at $54.99. I'm very pleased with them. They hold all my lines nicely plus the wench handle and can be quickly and easily removed for cleaning. (their cat. no 600558)
Hope this will help anyone else adding this valuable accessory.

Sheet bags are great. We have ours mounted on the cabin top. This way you can still lean against the bulkheads without a sheet bag as lumber support.
