Kayak size on a Cat 36 MKII

Purchased a CAT 36 MKII a couple of months ago. It's our first boat. The stanchions already have Kayak mounts installed and we are considering purchasing a Kayak for recreational use around the marina.  Would like a tandem kayak. Most tandem kayaks are about 13.5', and I'm wondering if thats too long.  Anyone had any experience with a kayak of this length getting in the way of jib sheets, etc?

Michael;
 Yes & Yes!
When we first took ownership of our C-36 we thought it would be a great idea to put a tandem kayak aboard. 12'5" long.  It turned out to be too large for our use and much too difficult to get in to from the walk thru transom of the boat. Plus, it seemed to be constantly in the way of our jib lines and the foredeck. (Think anchor and docking access)
So we chucked that idea and went with two smaller kayaks and put those on deck. That turned out to be the fore mentioned problems times two! With one kayak on each side, one could no longer quickly access the foredeck which provided quite a bit of entertainment to those folks on the Y.C. porch watching me dock.
We then moved to a hard fiberglass sailing dink, thinking how cool it would be to sail around the anchorage in the late afternoon, and tow it behind the boat. Besides the fact that it doubled the fuel consumption when towing, it proved very ‘tippy’ when trying to get into it from the walk-thru transom. Additionally, it was difficult to store & manage on deck because of its weight. It was an idea that seemed better sitting at the kitchen table than in reality. Onward.
We finally gave in and purchased a 9’5” Achilles hard bottom inflatable powered by a very manageable 4 HP outboard. We don’t go like a bat out of heck but a 35 pound outboard is very manageable off the rear of the boat.  This was the final solution – matter of fact the dink is called ‘The Final Solution’
 The H.B.I. is lifted out of the water on a block & tackle attached to the spin halyard and is easily stored inverted on foredeck of the boat providing plenty of deck room for anchoring & dock line access. We also found that using a boarding ladder on the side of the boat C-36- rather than using the walk-thru transom, made it much easier to get in and out of the dink when there was a breeze blowing.

Congratulations on your new boat and I hope it gives you many years of enjoyment. Do be afraid to ask questions here on the forum, we’ve all been where you are. New boat….new challenges.

Bill.... I too carry my inflatable on the foredeck while cruising but if your going to store it there all season you might want to consider getting a cover for it. The sunlight ages the material and you'll get years less service from the inflatable if left constantly exposed.i

Thanks Chuck,
 We actually only carry it there while cruising and you're correct - we do have a cover for it, otherwise it sits covered on the dock behind the house. It's one of those full one piece waterproof sun covers that will cover the Hypalon Dink even when it's strapped down inverted on the foredeck.
Chuck, check your messages, I sent you a personal note.

Thanks everyone.  Very helpful.  You've confirmed some of my concerns and brought a few things to my attention that I hadn't considered. Getting in the way of pulling into the slip and docking is a big deal for a rookie like me.

The boat came with a 9.5' Achilles inflatable in good shape, so I think we'll just stick with that for now.

Bill - from the post it looks like you have a Doyle sail pack.  Questions - I'll start a new thread.

Bill, what is that small door on your stern by the exit on starboard side?

Gary;
I'd love to tell you it was something exotic like 'rocket assist' .....LOL .....but it's just a shower door. I moved the outdoor shower from the stern to the cockpit lazaret.
Down here in Florida, you want to keep as much moisture as possible out of the cabin - so the indoor shower in the head area is seldom used. I have an cloth enclosure in the cockpit for privacy. The thing works out much better.

Hi Michael,

Yes, I had a Hobie tandem kayak that I carried on Garhauer kayak racks on the stanchions. I worked well with no problems.  IN fact, on one voyage to Santa Cruz Island (offshore of Santa Barbara, CA) I actually had two tandems, one on each side! Here are some photos.
