Horizontally mounted Windlass Anchoring

Hello 36'ers
I am purchasing new ground tackle for my new-to-me 1989 Cat 36, Maverick.
I am getting a Manson 44, 100 ft BBB chain and 200 feet of 5/8 3 strand rode.
My anchoring grounds are the channel Islands off the gold coast of CA. We experience all kinds of weather from dead flat calm to rolly to 45-50kt sundowners coming off the islands.
I would like to hear from other what their experiences are with their horizontally mounted windlass. There is no gypsy, just a drum.
Thanks
Capt Bill

I had that windlass on my '97. Certainly undersized and less useful since it can't handle chain. I replaced mine with a Maxwell VW1500, a huge improvement. There are a couple threads on this forum about winch replacement, try a search.

You may want to consider getting G40 Hi Test chain instead off BBB as most windlasses seem to be set up to fit the G40. Otherwise, sounds like a good anchor setup..!!!

Not trying to hijack this thread but now that a few of us have installed the VW1500 and know how well they work. What I have noticed is how much the anchor locker box does flex at times when the anchor is set deep. I know our boxes are not designed that strong as I have added glass to the back side and it has helped some but not enough. I know at times I have been scared that the admaril would rip the windlass out if she did not stop moving over the anchor to pull it out. I know I could use a hook and line on the chain and once over top of it and cleat it off then slacken the chain back off and pull it out that way. Then continue bringing it in after removing the hook and line. I just thought other would like to know what issues can creep up once going to a more powerful windlass of the same physical size. Has anyone else stiffenex the box up to reduce flexing?

My 89 did not have a windlass from the factory. I solved the problem of trying to transfer windlass loads into the fiberglass structure by mounting the windlass on an aluminum frame that is in contact with the end of the anchor roller frame. I have used this system now for several years, and have seen no flexing or signs of distress. You can find some photos and details in the archives if you search for posts under my name. There is a pdf document titled Windlass Installation for 1989 C36.

I too installed a VW1500. I don't know if Catalina made changes between 1990 and 1997, but the area of my anchor locker where the windlass is installed has 1/2" or 3/4" fiberglassed over on both sides. I've never observed any flex, but, until I read this thread, I've never really looked for it. I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm pulling the anchor out of the mud.
