Head Hatch Leak Update

A few months ago I posted about a problem I had with a continual leak from the head hatch. This is to follw up on the solution.

Before the specifics, I want to share a story I heard from a boat show broker.... he said power boaters come to shows in tank tops with gold chains around their necks,  Rolex watches on their wrists and a trophy wife on their arm. When they see something they like they say "I'll take two of those".

Sailors, on the other hand, show up in floppy hates wearing khaki cargo shorts (with some bottom paint on them) and duct tape holding their boat shoes together.  When they see something they like they say "I could make that". My solution falls in the latter category.

Back to the leak. I tried using Boat Life to seal around the hatches and the mast step but with no luck. I've also heard there is a marine prodcut something like "mast tight"??? One day however,  I saw that guy advertising Flex Seal on TV where he made a boat out of card board and coated it with flex seal. Off I went to Home Depot for a $30 quart of Flex Seal. I taped the mast 1/4" above the boot and 1/4" out from the mast base and applied two coats of the seal over everything...just had the remaining front edge of Delta come thru NJ with a steady day of heavy rain and wind and bone dry.

Flex Seal comes in black and is like a heavy paint, but it does not run. It also comes in clear in a spray can but that would have resulted in a film all over the cabin top so I went with the black. It's glossy but if your not looking for it, you'd never notice it. I've attached a pic so you can see the results. The smallest can you can buy is a quart and you need about 1/16th of a quart for the job so if anyone is in NJ and needs some, let me know.

Hope everyone had a good season as we haul in the NE!

What about the hatch leak? Is this product UV protected?
Looks great on the mast base.

Hey Chuck, that was a novel approach to a lingering problem. One of the guys in the boat yard used this approach an swears by it. No leaks in six years; https://www.cruisingworld.com/how/reader-tip-no-more-leaky-mast/     Talk about novel !
I've used that 'Spartite' on a Tartan 30 mast and it works well but I'd never want to have to remove the mast for any reason.

Haro...

The hatch leak was caused by the water running down from the mast area. UV protected????? They advertise it for roof leaks so it's meant for external use. Siince I have 17/16th of a quart left, I can put additional coats on if I need to.
