Further to this recent Galley Sink Drain Hose thread, I have a slightly different question.
I am using Shields Series 162 hose to replace out sink drain hoses.
My question is this:
Background - The sink drains themselves are plastic. I have purchased new Forespar SW4 1" drains. They, like the old ones, are plastic and I know all about the pros & cons of them. Not an issue for me.
Question - I am having an incredibly difficult time getting the OEM drains off the sink. Anybody have experience with them??? I'm getting ready to use dynamite on them.

For all we know, the drains were installed with a 'permanent' type of sealant. I have no experience to help you.

When you remove the first locking collar for the drain hose connections, what remains is the larger black collar that holds the plastic insert in place against the bottom of the sink. The caulking used to bed the drain to the top of the sink is not glue. The problem I'm having is that when I turn the remaining collar, the plastic drain insert itself also turns and there's little to hld with no leverage.
I'm taking the Dremel to it this afternoon.

I am not a plumber Stu but I have seen them use two crossed conventional screw drivers inserted from the top into the drain grid , some one holds them to lock the sink side of the drain fitting and someone uses a large wrench on the ring nut under the sink. May not work for the small sink drain....

My grandfather ("Pop" to me) was a plumber. I once asked my father if Pop had ever tried to influence him to become a plumber. My father replied "no, he wouldn't show me anything, said the last thing in the world you want to be is a plumber'.
Stu is finding out why

Since you have tried everything - dremal tool is not out of question. I would cut the plastic or metal lock nut from both sided then pry the nut off the drain fixture. I would use a soldering iron to melt the ring first - if possible. A photo would be nice.

Dremel is the RIGHT answer.
Thanks.
Here's the result.
BTW, BOTH the collar and the drain are PLASTIC. You might want to look carefully at what you have in your sinks, 'cuz that's waht they installed at the factory.
I'm going to write the whole saga up for a Mainsheet article. With flix. :)

Does anybody know if the drain holes in the galley sink are some standard diameter? I would prefer to replace them with something in stainless or maybe chrome finish. The tail would need to be a barbed fitting to accommodate the hose down to the seacock.
Interesting thread. Never would have occurred to me that the drains couldn't be easily removed after backing off their retaining nuts. Maybe I'll be living with the peeled up plastic faux chrome coating on the top of the drains? Looks like crap, but maybe not worth the grief? Would like to hear from someone who has replaced the drains and what they replaced them with.
Thanks

Jack, here's what got me started on this replacement. Lots of choices. Read the links inside the topics, too.

I tried the Forespar plastic replacements, but the double threaded elbows didn't work for me, I bought the ambassador fittings, waiting for them to be delivered tomorrow by UPS. Bar sink drains didn't work for me since I decided to use hose instead of PVC. I haven't updated that thread yet.

Thanks, Stu
You have, once again, helped me avoid trouble. Read the link you included in your post and all the others included therein. There is a lot more to replacing the sink drains than meets the eye. Will be interesting to see how you turn out with the Ambassador drains.
Really do appreciate your continued participation in the C36 Owners' Forum. What an incredible source of information.
Thanks again.

Jack,
Thank you. The similarities of our boats helps many of us peruse both websites to learn as much as we can. So many issues are not boat-specific, and translate well between ANY boats.
Tom Soko, among others, have joined both sites and contribute regularly to both.
I can't wait til tomorrow.

I have a double galley sink and the drains have to be replaced. The drains are white plastic bowls and I have not been able to find the right replacement. I have seen references from other posts and looked at Grohe, Forespar and Scandvik > They don't match. I have a 1985 Catalina and hope someone else has had the same problem and can offer a replacement. Otherwise I will have to remove the old drains and build an alternative from scratch.

Tom, have you read the link I provided earlier? It gives three options.
I used the ambassador successfully, all done! :):):)

catalina direct has direcet replacement sink drain dropouts made of stainless. the holes in the older catalina sinks are an odd size so standard fittings don't work. mine fit and look great.
