Farewell and Fair Winds

After 11 years of our stewardship and many fine memories, C36 # 466 Que Chévere has a new owner and a new name ("Jehhle Fish"), sailing out of Narragansett Bay.     (We're now the owners of a Catalina Morgan 440, # 30, which we've renamed "Que Chévere").

Thanks to all of you for your many contributions to the knowledge base and to our enjoyment of this great boat; hopefully we've been able to contribute back (or pay forward) somewhat to the members of the C36IA.  Fair winds to you all!

Sorry to see you go Matt. Your insight and contribution over the years has been a great help here on this forum and especially to me.
All the best with the new boat.

Best of luck Matt.  Hope to see the CM44 on Buzzards Bay this summer!

Matt-
Good luck with the CM440. Nice roomy boat!
Do you have any comments regarding the used sailboat market from a buy/ sell perspective? Anything like the current car and housing markets where transactions are closing way over sticker/asking prices?

Hi Paul! (As you may recall, I actually sailed close by your boat a few years ago offshore near the Isle of Shoals, but couldn't raise you on the VHF).
Anyway, when we did our transactions at the end of last season it seemed to be very much a sellers' market.  We found our CM440 through that association's users group (alas, entirely Facebook-based, grrrr.), and so there was no broker involved; we paid not much less that the asking price (which I think was in line with the market at that time).   We had also seen but ultimately rejected another CM440 via a broker (they only made 60 of them, so not many come up on the market); the broker mentioned that there was a real dearth of used boat inventory among brokers because they were turning over so fast.  Our surveyor said the same thing, said he'd never been so busy.
At the same time, we managed to sell our C36 without a broker as well (I think we had it on Craigslist, SailboatListings.com, and a few other sites like that) within maybe a week of putting it on the market; we got A LOT of interest very quickly.  I think we got a good price for her, although I probably discounted my selling price more that I might otherwise have done had I not been incentivized to speedily exit my temporary status of owning 2 sailboats at once.
Apparently, the COVID lockdown and related social restrictions created a vast demand for cruising sailboats -- as we know, its one of those things you can have fun doing these days and still maintain relative social isolation.

Thanks for the market research Matt.
I have two long time friends that just exited from sailing due to age and health, and their experience pretty was similar to yours selling their boats.
We are probably heading to the Vineyard and Nantucket this season, so maybe our paths may cross again. I'll be sure to leave the VHF on!

Probably heading up to Maine and N.S. this summer, so we may indeed cross paths.
