Engine Paint

When I bought my boat, the engine had over 3,500 hours on it. But it looked clean and was covered with a very attractive silver paint. I have noticed that whenever I put a wrench to a bolt, the silver paint flakes off and leaves the metal exposed underneath. I am sure this engine has been worked on many times since 1993, so my question is how did they keep it looking so clean and untouched all these years? Is there a paint that you spray on each time after it flakes off from various maintenance tasks?

Your engine may have been cleaned (de-greased) and completely re-painted prior to purchase. On the list of possible pre-purchase "upgrades" to roll into the purchase price, I have heard this offered as an option by brokers or POs. It sounds as though somebody used cheap paint, if it is flaking off that easily.

my engine with 1800 hrs has area's where the paint is cracked and if picked at will flake off, it appears though that there is a white primer under the gray paint layer.

Too bad...I was hoping their was an inexpensive solution to paint dandruff/bare spots caused by routine maintenance :(

Westerbeke/Universal does carry a spray can touch-up paint. But my dealer here wants $39 a can for it.
You may be able to take a bigger sized chip in and get a colour match and buy a small can for brush touch-ups...

After I had a new rad cap neck soldered into the exhaust manifold the paint on the manifold and valve cover was pretty much toast from the heat required and the spray on flux that bounced off the manifold and onto the valve cover. I bought a can of silver high heat paint, I am sure it was Tremclad, and after wire brushing the metal sprayed it on. It looks very close to the original colour and after 3 years it is still hanging in there.
