Next summer we are going to head east, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Erie Barge Canal then down the Hudson to NYC.
At that point we will go north to Cape Cod.
Any thoughts or advice? Lots of experience in the North Channel in Ontario, but we have never been east. How is the trip from NYC to Newport....then on to Cape Cod? Are there places to put in along the way?
Any anchorages?
Many thanks.

Lots of places-- and way too many to list here. I'd suggest looking on Active Captain, or getting one of those cruising guides. The LI Sound segment will probably be 2 fairly long (40 nm) days, you could stop halfway at, say, Miford on the CT coast or Mt. Sinai on the LI Coast. Then maybe to Stonington Ct, then Newport RI. From there, Cuttyhunk Island (MA), then the Cape or Martha's Vinyard.

Get a copy of the Eldridge tide book. You'll need to follow that to go up the East River a, thru the Race and the Cape Cod canal. If you go with the tides... no problem.
There is a port just as you get to the Cap Cod Canal on the north side, the name of which escapes me at the moment but you'll see it on your chart. That's where you'll want to hang waiting for the tide before transiting the canal. I find its best to go thru early in the morning before the wind picks up out of the west and its nice and calm at the entrance to the canal.

On the north / east end, its Sandwich. On the south/west end, Onset or Red Brook (Red Brook is particularly lovely....).

There have been threads where those of us on LI Sound have posted favorite harbors. Try to find them, or ask for more info when you start serious planning. You may want to divert also after Newport to Greenport, Sag Harbor, and naturally on to Block Island and Marthas Vineyard.
