Cockpit Locker questions from possible new Catalina 36 purchaser

Hi

I currently own a Catalina 30 and been thinking of moving up to a Catalina 36.  I recently went to view a Catalina 36 and  I was surprised when I opened the Port cockpit locker and noticed it was very shallow.   I assumed it would of been a huge locker similar to the Catalina 30 where you can almost stand up in.     It appeared to only be 1-2 feet deep.   Am I correct.    Also wondering about the aft locker.  I didn't open it up.   Just wondering where you keep your propane bottles.  Is this aft locker larger enough to hold 20lb propane tanks? and a sailbag or two?

thanks
Terry Scott

The port cockpit locker is a little over a foot deep.  Below the locker is the aft berth which is a larger space than the Catalina 30.

The aft port locker is the propane locker.  The aft starboard locker is quite deep.  I have climbed completely into mine.

The port side locker although is shallow compared to the 30 Catalina is actually a good sized locker. I owned a 30 Catalina for 18 years and I am still amazed at the amount of storage space available in the 36. On my boat I have the walk through stern and the Starboard Lazzerette is deep enough to stand items up and has quite a lot of space as well. The port side has the propane locker and pretty much utilizes the whole space. I do keep a long handle pump in this locker and it probably could take an adjustable boat hook. I did cut out the box under the locker and made access through the aft cabin and that is where I keep spare quarts of oil, filters, grease, etc.

I actually keep my roll-up dinghy in that port locker when I'm cruising and don't want to tow, along with all my assorted cleaning products.

I definitely would not recommend storing propane tanks in the aft lockers if that is what you are thinking about, They don't drain overboard and you could have an explosion if pro[pane leaked.

I went from a C30 to 36 MKII and think the locker is really more useful than on the 30.  It holds much more than you'd think, but also due to design, makes everything accessible.  You could lose a kid in the C30 locker.  The propane tank has a separate locker aft of the larger locker... at least on the MKII.  Also, you have very deep lockers on both sides of the stern.  There's a lot of storage under the aft berth mattress too....  for stuff you don't need in a hurry.  I wouldn't worry about storage on this boat.

Great comments thanks for the recommendations.   Didn't realize the aft lockers were so versatile.  Was worried about storage for all the stuff you want to leave on deck, fenders, shore power, possible storm jib etc.    Should of looked closer I guess.

I keep lines, generator, buckets and cleaning stuff in port locker.  Fenders in port aft locker.  Hoses cables and spare anchor in starboard aft locker. Spare oils, antifreeze, etc under aft bunk.  Spare parts lubricants, oils, etc in boxes under forward bunk.  The one thing I have tough time figuring out is sail inventory.  Any advice from this group?

Since I added a 25 Gallon water tank the bow compartment is a bit more crowded, but that is where I store the Spinnaker along with other spare parts and hardware.

My boat came with the following: In port cockpit locker, there are 3 plastic 'milk crates'.  Spare chain and rode and kellet in one; oil, diesel additives, coolant etc in another; and cleaners, brushes, hose etc in a 3rd.  Makes it easy to retrieve stuff by shifting crates around.  Also keep bucket and brushes etc in that locker.  I installed a wire cage around the refrigeration compressor which is at the forward end of the locker - to protect it.  In the starboard lazarette locker, there is a series of line loops that hold all our coiled line 'tails' as well as the lines for our 6 fenders. Makes for easy retrieval of lines and fenders. All loops are fastened on a wood batten secured to the forward side of the lazarette.  Port lazarette has a fibreglass box with drain for the propane bottle.  All in all, practical and efficient storage.
