It may be becase I'm getting olded, and so is the original foam, but I would like to replce our matress in the V Berth. Not sure what to do or what I need to spend. any thoughts? I know that you can get propper matresses, but I think they are $$$$$.
Thanks for your thoughts!

We got a new mattress this season from Handcraft Mattress. VERY happy!

We replaced our original foam with another foam from a local reupholster and hated it...too hard. It’s very difficult to tell how it will “sleep” by squeezing a foam sample. Next, we bought an innerspring mattress from Catalina. That was pretty good, lasted maybe 15 years. At the end of last season we took a good look at the innerspring and it was pretty wavy. Time to go shopping. We went to the Newport Boat Show and looked and tried out many. That was a good decision as you can actually try lying on all the different products. So we went for HCM, latex foam with different densities. They all have you make a template. We did, following their instructions and it fit perfectly. It wasn’t cheap. With shipping to the Northeast, we were just about at $3000. Still, it’s great and HCM is a real pleasure to deal with.

If you can, I highly recommend going to a good show to try the different products.

Are you saying 3K just for the V-Birth?

Thanks but 3000USD seems expensive, that's 4300 Canadian.
Any other thoughts?

Have you considered a mattress pillow top from Tufted Topper? It is a custom fit pad of memory foam. Very comfortable on our '98. They will also custom tailor sheets for it. They advertise regularly in the Mainsheet. I believe the cost as around $250.

We added a 3" Serta gel memory foam cooling mattress topper and cut the foam to fit. Looks custom and sleeps better than our mattress at home. We got it on sale form Kohls department store for I think $130.00

My husband got a great deal last year on a 1995 with sad horrible stinky, moldy, engine oiled cushons in the back and front.  I was not so thrilled.  BUT he also bought me a Sailrite LSZ-1 sewing machine which I love.  I got to work on this.... getting 4 inch foam from Amazon for front and back, a queen size 2 inch topper called Serene ( better than memory foam for comfort) for the V birth.  I followed the Sailrite videos which were great.  Made a pattern from scrim. I made a cover for the topper to protect it and sewed on velcro flaps to avoid gaps.  It is AMAZINGLY comfortable.  We put Hypervent under the V Birth mattress to prevent further mold and moisture.  The back area also had the gigantic piece which you have to fight with to get under or move and my husband wanted to have storage space in the unused back area... so I divided up the big piece into 3 smaller ones which fit nicely and there is room for storage boxes now.  I haven't made a topper for the back due to needing to get back under this space often.  We didn't put hypervent under because it is so easy to open up with the smaller sized cushons.   Total cost was $700 for foam and materials.  $1200 for the sewing machine,  Plus I've replaced dodger windows, patched up the older front sail and made a mainsail cover from a Sailrite kit.  I truly love this boat now... And this summer has been the best.   Bonnie

I replaced our aft cabin matress with a 6" memory foam matress 'in a box' from jysk. (like an IKEA) But Wal-mart sells them too. $250 Canadian. Cut it to size with a bread knife, worked like a charm and very comfortable.
And easy to transport to the boat over the docks since it's in a box with wheels, like a suitcase.
